Gray Television Expands Its Use of Sony’s Media Backbone Technologies

by Tom Di Nome 02/05/2013

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Feb. 5, 2013 – KWTX-TV, News 10 in Waco, Texas, will go on-air in March 2013 with Sony’s Media Backbone Production System. This roll-out marks the third application of Sony Media Backbone technology within the Gray Television group, with at least three more installs at Gray stations planned over the next 12 months.

KWTX-TV joins sister stations KXII (Sherman, Texas) and KBTX (Bryan, Texas) as the latest Gray operations to streamline their news production workflow, and enhance their abilities to get content shot, edited and sent to air faster and more efficiently than its competitors. According to Gray, WITN (Greenville, N.C.) is also planned to go on-air with the Media Backbone Production Systems technology in the first half of 2013.

Like the many other broadcast organizations that have adopted the Sony Media Backbone family of solutions, KWTX chose the technology after a careful evaluation of its capabilities. In addition to increasing newsroom efficiency, according to the station, the features that impressed them most were its enhanced ingest capabilities and ability to provide simultaneous access to content by multiple parties.

Gray Television has been a longtime user of Sony broadcast and production technology, implementing a range of equipment over the years from the XDCAM optical disc system to most recently, Sony’s Video Journalism Backpack field production and editing package for broadcast video journalists.

This latest roll-out of Media Backbone Solutions highlights Gray’s continued application of the latest Sony production innovations.

Media Backbone Production System also allows operators to use metadata more effectively, to make searching for and archiving content easier. Users can add clip and timecode based metadata, even as material is coming into the system, which allows them to more easily identify and jump to key points in video, further enhancing workflow.

As Sony continues to add more features and functionality to its Media Backbone Solutions, stations and groups like Gray will be able to take advantage of the system’s scalability to grow with them as their needs and production requirements increase.
