A Smart Stick for your 2013 Sony TV

by Ray Hartjen 09/13/2013

**Editor’s note:  Sony’s press release announcing full details has been distributed, and you can find out additional product details here.**

On Sunday, Sony will be pushing out a press release announcing a new accessory for its 2013 BRAVIA® television line. But, I hate keeping secrets, so if you keep it under your hat, I’ve got something to show you.

Check out the picture of the new gizmo, below.

Any guesses what it is?

I can’t give you the model number just yet – you’ll have to visit www.sony.com/news on the 15th for that. But, we call it the “BRAVIA Smart Stick.”

It plugs into the MHL connection on the back of 2013 Sony BRAVIA televisions, with another short cable plugged into the USB port for power. No other power source necessary.

So what? You want to know what it does, right?

The BRAVIA Smart Stick makes the 2013 BRAVIA line of televisions smart. Oh, the connected BRAVIA TVs are already grade school smart. The Smart Stick graduates them to PhD-level smarts.

Viewers can either type or speak into the Smart Stick’s included universal remote and enjoy the power of Google Chrome™ search for results from cable/satellite providers, the internet, and thousands of apps. It’s so smart it integrates into a user’s existing cable or satellite service so there is no need to clumsily switch inputs to enjoy content from either source.

Out of the box, the Smart Stick is pre-installed with apps like Netflix®, Pandora®, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube and more. Viewers can personalize their TV experience by adding video, music, games, social networking and news apps from the Google Play Store™ – just like the ones available for smartphones.

So, it’s Google TV, right?

Not so fast!

The BRAVIA Smart Stick’s user interface seamlessly integrates Google TV and Sony’s own BRAVIA apps, allowing viewers to stay in a single menu to launch any of their apps, including BRAVIA apps like the Internet Video Library.

Additionally, the BRAVIA Smart Stick’s Picture-and-Picture feature allows viewers to surf the web and watch TV at the same time in two independent windows on the television screen, without interfering with one another. Perfect for Fantasy Football, with one screen showing the game and another showing live scoring updates of your fantasy league, it’s also perfect for live tweeting or updating a Facebook® status while watching award shows or other televised events and programming.

In other words, the BRAVIA Smart Stick will take your TV watching experience to the next level. And, you know about it first! More details to come …

Great to see all the details on this product. The remote looks great, and that’s the one thing that drives me crazy about my chromecast when it stops responding.

Hi Tracy, only 2013 TVs have the MHL connection suited for the BRAVIA Smart Stick. The good news is that there is an alternative solution for folks who have previous TV models, the NSZ-GS8 Internet Player with Google TV! More info: http://bit.ly/19BmlWj
