I am interested in the Sony FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD media player. For may application, I need a 32 inch display in 4K. So the Sharp 4K fufills that need.

Some of the wording seems to imply that the FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD media player is not interoperable with other 4K TVs, is that correct or am I reading to much into the wording.

Regarding the Sony FMP-X1, a blog from the Residential Systems Blog indicated:

” … the FMP-X1 is only compatible with the two most recent Sony 55- and 65-inch XBR x900A models. Hook it up to anything else, even Sony’s own 4K-native VPL-VW1000ES projector or the 84-inch flat-panel set, and it simply won’t work.

… but if the display is anything other than the two X900A models, then you are just out of luck.”

Can you confirm this interpretation. The technical specification did not seem to explicitly limit the usage to the two new models of TVs.

        Good morning Mel,

Thank you for your comments about the 4K UHD Media Player and your Sony VPL-VW1000ES projector. As you may know, the VPL-VW1000ES projector was designed and built over two years ago, based on the industry standards in existence at that time. That projector is still the cutting-edge projector that it was designed to be, and will display unsecured 4K video and upscale HD video to an outstanding image.

The new Sony 4K UHD media player is designed to allow customers to have access to some of the latest 4K movies and TV shows and uses the latest industry standards to deliver secure signals to the display devices. While our newest 4K UHD TV’s were able to incorporate the new technology as soon as it became available, earlier products such as the VPL-VW1000ES will require an update to interface with the new server.

As a valued customer, please be assured we will meet your expectations to provide a path for you to enjoy 4K content from a player to work with the VPL-VW1000ES. Details of the program to interface to a 4K media player will be announced and implemented as the Video Unlimited 4K download service is launched later this summer.

        Thank you for your patience.

It is extremely disappointing that the 4k media player doesn’t work with your flagship projector. One would think that with the investment required of those like myself who purchased these projectors they would be among the first to enjoy the content.

The VPL-VW1000ES projector was designed and built over two years ago based on industry standards in existence at that time. Still cutting edge, the VPL-VW1000ES displays both unsecured 4K video and upscales HD video to produce an amazing image.

The new Sony FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD media player is the only device that provides native 4K feature films and TV programming to customers, and uses the latest industry standards to deliver content securely. While our newest 4K Ultra HD televisions incorporate new technologies, earlier products such as the VPL-VW1000ES require an update.

Please be assured Sony will meet your expectations to provide a path for you to enjoy 4K content from a media player compatible with the VPL-VW1000ES.
