Announcing: Sony’s First All 4K Ultra HD Media Player and Content Download Service

by Katie 07/03/2013

This year at CES we promised you access to true 4K video content in your home by summer and today, we’re happy to announce its arrival. You can now purchase the Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player online at Sony Store.

We’re pretty excited about the 4K Ultra HD feature films preloaded on the player including Spider Man, Taxi Driver and Total Recall – to name a few. Also launching soon is Sony’s new Video Unlimited 4K Ultra HD service available later this summer with many more feature films, TV episodes and a variety of short-form video – all with 4K native picture quality and wider color gamut. The cost for Downloads of feature film titles as 24-hour rentals or for purchase will s start at $7.99 and $29.99.

Lastly, for those of you who already own a Sony X900A 4K Ultra HD TV, you can cash in a $200 introductory discount for your media player purchase and we’re also providing in-home premium service activation on qualifying X900A TVs free of charge. This will ensure compatibility of the TV with the 4K Ultra HD Media Player and you can visit www.4kactivation.com to check if your Sony 4K Ultra HD TV qualifies.

This question is about your PS4. Will you have PSHome on it? and How will it work?

    Does the footnote
Fees may apply for 4K networked video service.
Mean that I am limited to One 4K TV in my house (not a problem yet, but next year).
    Also, does the footnote
exclusively compatible with Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs (55X900A and 65X900A).
mean that I will be unable to use this device on ANY current or future 4K device?

Hi James, thanks for your question. You are not limited to (1) Sony 4K TV in your home. The service allows you to rent and download films individually (similar to our existing Video Unlimited service) and will not affect how many 4K TVs you own. And while we usually refrain from commenting on future technologies and products, the Media Player and the Video Unlimited 4K service is being designed with both current and future 4K display products in mind.

Will you offer a monthly subscription deal, as Netflix or Hulu. But for 4k viewing.

Hi Antonio, thanks for your question! Our model for the service follows Video Unlimited (rentals & downloads). At this time, we have no plan to offer a subscription based service.

You are NOT competitive with cable, Netflix, Redbox or iTunes. Reevaluate your pieces or you are dead in the water!

Hi Tommy, the cost of the 4K TV depends on what size you plan to purchase. You can check them out at http://store.sony.com. Set up would generally require at least two people. We also have a team that can assist with installation!

How in the world did Sony forget the owners of the Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K Projectors???

The projectors have been out for a few years and we have been patiently waiting for Sony to provide some 4K content.

I have been told by several Sony employees since CES in January that the 4K media player would work with the Projector and be available in the summer.

Imagine my surprise when I ordered one and had it shipped overnight only to discover that Sony changed the HDMI output on the Player and the new Sony TV’s and the Projector I just purchased this year is already an antique to Sony.

Can someone at Sony please explain what the heck happened here?

Hi Mark, thanks for reaching out and totally hear where you’re coming from. While the FMP-X1 isn’t currently compatible with your projector, we have a solution and will be rolling it out soon. Stay tuned!

I bought a VPL-VW1000ES 6 months ago. I bought it with assurance from Sony sales reps at Cedia that it will be compatible with a 4K player. They also said the if the projector needed an upgrade to do it it will be a complementary upgrade. I am ready to buy the 4k player. Please let me know asap when the upgrade is available

Are you going to build any of these capabilities into the PS4? Sure seems like a way to lure more Xbox customers over into your camp. With PS3 blu-ray did that for you, but Xbox one has that too this year. Add this to the PS4!

Do not waste your time on this product. It does not work out of the box. An appointment needs to be schedule with a “Certified Sony Tech” to come to your home to do some programming and it takes 2 weeks for them to schedule it. I just returned it. Not worth the time.

        Hello Kathleen,
The Dealer had no clue what you are referring to. Also, Sony tech support said there will not be a solution available until Summer 2014!
        Please advise!
