Help Sony’s President Name His Pink Audio Balls

by Phil Molyneux 02/26/2013

Pink Balls.

Certainly catchier than “Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speakers,” no?

We announced Sony’s wireless mobile speakers – in the shape of pink, black, and white balls – at the CES press conference this past January, when I said, “I carry my pink balls with me wherever I go…”

I liked the sound of it.

But in my 25 years with Sony, we’ve tended to drift away from some of the more clever and catchy product names like Walkman, for example, and for two primary reasons. First, naming products decades ago was much easier than it is today. You have bundles of trademarks, international laws, focus group testing and even packaging to take into consideration. It’s quite the complex process, often starting with more than 600 options before narrowing the list down to one.

Second, our model selection has increased greatly over the years, growing to tens of hundreds of products, which makes finding that one ideal name for each individual product much more difficult. We can’t apply the same rigor in pinpointing great names for great products like our Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speakers.

That’s where you come in. A gadget that looks like this with the potential to get cheeky needs more. I want to change it … no more “Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speakers.” And I’m looking to you for help. I need your input and inspiration. Tell me your thoughts and ideas on how we can bring this product to life through a name.

I invite you to enter the Help us with a Name Contest. To get the creative juices going, you can learn more about the product here. Know that I’ll be personally reading every entry left in the comments section below … And here’s some more motivation: I’ll send  the top five favorite names submitted in the Contest a pair of Sony Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speakers.  See the Official Contest Rules for details.

Please keep in mind the complexity of the naming process I described above, and remember it’s a long road. But I’m committed to seeking your input and using it in our ultimate decision.

Have fun with it. I know there are a lot of creative minds out there, and I look forward to seeing your ideas. I challenge you to tap into your brilliance and use your imagination on this one.

    How about something like…

    The Sony Sfera,

    I think that it is a cool name because Sfera is Italian for Sphere. Also if Sony wanted to do so, they could do something like they did with the VAIO (Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer).

    I was thinking for the acronym maybe something like, Sony Formidable Endless Audio, or Sound Force Epic Audio, or anything that sounds better.

    Anyway, Thats what I think would be a cool name, and BTW I think that it is really awesome that you are personally reading all of these :)

    Maybe If I’m Lucky I’ll get a Sony Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speaker, and If i’m really lucky I’ll be recieving a Sony Sfera.

    Sony Audio MUSE(or AMUSE)

    Description Below:

    MUSE:
    1. To be absorbed in one’s thoughts; engage in meditation.

    2.To consider or say thoughtfully: A state of meditation.

    3. A guiding spirit.
    4. A source of inspiration.
    5. A poet.

    AMUSE:

    1. to entertain or occupy in a light, playful, or pleasant manner

    CREATING ABBREVIATION:

    A=Audio
    M=Mobile/Music/Memories/Moments
    U= User/Uber/
    S=Sharing/Share/Sphere/
    E =Entertainment/Experience

    WHY:

    Music and other types of audio are very well considered muses. People are very happy when listening to their music, some meditate to it, some simply listen and become engaged and deep in thought – another state of meditation.

    Typically, Sony sells headphones to their users, not allowing much sharing between one another.

    However,

    Although these sphere’s are very personal. These speakers are something you can share with one or two people, without overwhelming others around you.

    Be it your close friends, family, or simply share with who you wish, allow them to come into your world via SONY A(MUSE).
