Tips & Tricks: How to setup Voice and Video Chat on the Sony Tablet™ S

by Sarah 03/16/2012

So my friend, Stephanie, got a new Sony Tablet™ S for Christmas last year but she’s still using it to just play Angry Birds and browse the internet. She lives in Florida and her brother lives in New York (he also owns the Sony Tablet™ S and loves it). Adam, her brother, and I have been trying to get her out of her shell and explore the opportunities with a multimedia device like the Sony Tablet S. Now after just the right amount of nudging, she’s ready to attempt setting up a video chat session with Adam, using the Google Talk™ app.

Does this sound like your friend, family member or… you? Nervous to try new apps? Don’t be! It’s fun! We’ve heard from our product support team that a number of you have wanted some step by step instructions on the same thing, “how to start using the Google Talk™ application”. So the Sony Listens group has done just that. Here again is my colleague, Peg, to walk you through the simple steps on how to get you connected to your friends and family online and start up that conversation. Happy chatting and tell them Sarah said hi!!

How to initialize a voice or video chat session using the Talk application on your Sony Tablet™ S

Feel free to follow along with the steps listed below:

  1. On the desktop, tap the Home icon.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the desktop home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  3. In the Apps screen, tap the Talk icon.
  4. In the Accounts screen, tap the Sign in button. [NOTE - If you do not have a Google account then create a Google™ account and register the tablet to that account (Google™ requires that you read and accept their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy upon creating an account). Once a Google Account has been created and the tablet is registered to that account, restart this procedure from the beginning.]
  5. In the Talk screen, tap to place a check in the box next to Allow video and voice chats.
  6. Below your own Google Account, tap the user account you want to chat with.
  7. Tap the appropriate icon to begin either a voice or video chat session:
  • To begin a voice chat session, tap the Microphone icon.
  • To begin a video chat session, tap the Camera icon

  • Once either the Microphone or Camera icons have been tapped, the other user will be contacted and required to accept the chat invitation. Once they accept the invitation, the chat initialization is complete and the chat session will begin.
  • Any user account you want to video chat with must have a video icon next to their account name. This indicates that the user has a video camera or web cam and has the ability to initialize a video chat.

Tell us how your voice or video chat session went. How about a comment?

I have used Google chat twice and both times the video was great but the people on the other end complained they could barely hear me. I did some sound recording and found that the microphone on the tablet s is very poor quality. This also affects services such as voice search. I wouldbe very interested to find out if there was a way to improve this, as it is next to unusable.

Hi, I’ve had my Tablet S since launch here in London, and have tried using Skype, GTalk and Voice search, all with little success – due in no small part to the poor quality Microphone on Tablet S. Very much like Ashley above, I’ve found it very much unusable.
