Attack of the Media Monster!

VAIO News: Attack of the Media Monster

By: | Posted: 7/19/2010

This week, Sony’s latest ad campaign for VAIO kicks off by featuring its newest commercial in prime time.  In the ad, Justin Timberlake heads back to the Sony Innovation Center following his most recent trip to check out all things 3D.  This time he’s there to test and learn about the latest innovations from the Sony VAIO team and their line of personal computers.

Just as the day gets started though, Justin and his engineer tour guide enter the VAIO lab only to be confronted with a Media Monster so out of control, it seems close to overwhelming the interns tasked with managing him.  What happens next?  Well – I’d hate to spoil the ending.  Find out just how the Sony Engineer and Justin evade harm and ultimately tame the Media Monster with exclusive Sony technology by watching the full length commercial below.

The story doesn’t end there though.  Stay tuned for even more, including behind-the-scenes video from the commercial shoot, games and other surprises.

If you miss the prime time premier on television tonight you can always catch it on our YouTube channel, in theaters across the country and during the summer’s most popular shows throughout the coming weeks.

In the meantime, drop us a note below and let us know what you think of the commercial.

What’s Your E Color Combo?

By: | Posted: 7/09/2010

Over the centuries, fashion has lent itself as a means for style however one could argue that in the 21st century; perhaps technology has become the dominant means for personal expression? With this newer trend comes the complexity of selection. Now instead of a one-color computer option, we have many. And for online shoppers, I know first hand the devastation when you’ve invested money in a color combo that “looked right in your head” but in reality, it didn’t quite work.

Now, we’ve got a new tool that let’s you pick your passion by trying your designs before you buy. Our new VAIO E Color Combo site lets you virtually view the color options for not only your VAIO E notebook but the mouse, keyboard skin and sleeve. You can see all four items together and mix and match until your heart’s content. Here’s a peak

The Main Attraction: You can start with finding the right color VAIO E notebook you’d like. As you select the colors, you can undercover the expression behind your selection. For example, the white notebook which is seen as “smooth and sophisticated”.

What your mouse says about you: Eight color options are offered for the mouse cover and by scrolling over you not only see what each color symbolizes; the transitions between selections mirror the personality. While I’d personally pick white, I liked the transition of the orange mouse the best.

A Different  Keyboard Skin Monday through Friday: The keyboard skin selection is addicting. I’ve had my eye on the white VAIO E with blue keyboard skin but after playing with the tool, I’m seriously considering green instead. And for VAIO E fans, until July 17th, you can get a free keyboard skin with a purchase of  a customized built VAIO EB, EA or EC series laptop. Details are here.

See the Sleeve Selection: Designed by our very own Sony Style VAIO team (who come from some very well known fashion brands), these sleeves are reversible so you have more than one look.  I personally like pink so I can easily spot it in my huge bag.

So what’s your color combo? I’m talking notebook, keyboard skin, mouse cover and sleeve. Take a look at what selecting these colors uncover about your personality and passion. I’ve got 25 sleeves like the ones you saw in the tool ( designed to fit notebooks with an LCD size of 15.5″ (diag.) and under) so the first 25 people to post a comment in this post with their entire VAIO E series color combo (notebook color, keyboard skin, mouse cover & sleeve) will get a sleeve sent their way! Be sure that when you post your comment, you enter your real email address in the email field below (not in the comment area). Without a valid email address in that field, I won’t be able to reach you!

Two weeks ago, the VAIO team headed to L.A. to support Design For Humanity – Billabong’s annual charity event.  If you’ve seen the new boardshort-inspired W Series, you know we’ve partnered with Billabong to create the design.  We also featured the colorful new VAIO at the charity event.

Find out more about the event, the charity and what inspired the design of the Imperial Lime W Series in this behind-the-scenes look at the Design For Humanity charity event by our very own Sony Electronics video blogger, Sukhjit.

Summer VAIO Signature Collection Debuted

By: | Posted: 6/23/2010

The new Summer 2010 VAIO® Signature Collection made its debut this morning.

Ten models complete this season’s line and like the previous Spring Collection, it includes both laptops and a desktop.

New to the Signature family is the EA Signature models impressively out the gate with a unique Arabesque design. Starting at $919.00, its raised fanciful patterns feel similar to the touch as a luxurious wall mosaic. My favorite is the black Arabesque design as it is a clever way to combine an antique-like pattern with a contemporary glossy black.

A pink and gold Arabesque model is also offered. The Signature VAIO EA laptops are all customized models (and all come with the ATI graphics card option).

The Signature VAIO F laptop definitely lives up to the superior computing performance known to Signature Collection models and is a nice computer for photo enthusiast. This is the only VAIO F that includes the new VAIO TransferJet™ technology and also comes with premium specs such as a Full HD display, 1GB gfx, BDRW, 640GB, 8GB, and Windows 7 Ultimate.

The VAIO Z laptop makes two appearances in the collection this season and talk about gadget envy. The Carbon Fiber VAIO Z computer comes with an Intel ®Core™ I7-620M (2.66Hz) processor, Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate 64-bit, a 13.1” Full HD LED backlit display, a hybrid graphics card (1 GB VRAM), 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, a Blu-ray Disc™ player/burner, and Verizon Wireless with the new Share my Connection ™ technology that turns your PC into its own mobile hotspot for up to 5 PCs or other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Following the spring season’s “Metal Mosaic” look, the new Metal Shield VAIO Z model takes it up a level. Its design features a hexagonal object with a triangular object inside, giving an illusion of a spinning motion. Inside, the model is loaded with some pretty high tech features which make this VAIO a great one for travelers. Integrated active noise cancelling technology and supplied headphones provide crystal-clear audio in noisy mobile scenarios without an adapter (yep, this comes with noise canceling headphones).A built-in biometric fingerprint scanner makes authentication and secure access quick, and this VAIO also comes with the option for the new Share my Connection ™ technology.

The X135 also makes an appearance on the Summer Signature Collection page. Offered in Glossy Premium Carbon Fiber ($1599.99) and Black ($1499.99), the VAIO X weighs 1.6 lbs (with standard battery) and also comes with an extended battery in the box to allow the owner up to 12 hours of battery life. Exclusive to this model, it also comes with a 128 GB solid state drive. Other specs include an Intel® Atom™ Processor Z550 (2.0 GHz), Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 11.1” LED backlit display and 2 GB RAM.

In Signature tradition, a new P series is introduced and is the highest configuration of the VAIO P series to date and weighs 1.3 lbs (with standard battery).  The P118 specs include an Intel® Processor (2.00GHz), Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 8″ LCD, 2GB RAM, 256GB solid state drive, Verizon Mobile Broadband Built-in, GPS, Bluetooth® technology and a webcam.

And to round out the season, a new VAIO J all-in-one touchscreen PC is offered. The J118 is $1549.99 and comes in a contemporary white color.

What you think the general design aesthetic of this line is? I take away a dashing, urban feel. Maybe I got that impression from the witty subtle background in the Signature showcase. Do you see it?

….More photos for everyone :-) A shout out to our 6/24 Guest commenter for asking!

Join Us at the Design For Humanity Event and Make a Difference

By: | Posted: 6/10/2010

Last week we kicked off the unofficial start of summer by partnering with surf wear apparel brand Billabong to bring you a limited edition, boardshort-inspired design for the W Series.

All of us here on the VAIO team are so excited to be working with Billabong – and not just because a lot of us need new boardshorts.  In fact, to build on the partnership, Sony is participating in Billabong’s Design For Humanity event today – June 10th – in L.A. and we hope you’ll join us.

Design For Humanity was founded by Billabong and began as an opportunity for Billabong’s marketing, art and design teams to come together and give back to a non-profit cause close to their hearts.

This year, Design For Humanity will benefit Invisible Children – an inspired non-profit with an even more inspiring story.

In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers from Southern California traveled to Africa in search of a story.  What started out as a filmmaking adventure for them transformed into much more when they uncovered a tragedy were children are both the weapons and the victims in a war raging in northern Uganda for the past 23 years.

The young filmmakers captured this tragic story and upon returning to the states created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” which has now been seen by millions.  The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?”  And to answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

Invisible children focuses on long-term goals that enable children to take responsibility for their future and the future of their country.  Their programs are carefully researched and developed initiatives that address the need for quality education, mentorships, the redevelopment of schools, resettlement from refugee camps and financial stability.

You can help their cause tonight.  The Design For Humanity event is an opportunity not only for Billabong but their retailers, partners, athletes, celebrities, artists and ultimately you.  On a lit runway, inspired by art, screaming for a live band, Design For Humanity is one night of celebrating, motivated by cause, presented in a way Billabong knows best.  By attending this event or purchasing a Design For Humanity product, know that you’ve made a difference.

So if you find yourself in the greater L.A. area tonight, swing by the Paramount Studios and meet the VAIO team.  Come ready to check out some amazing art exhibits, catch a live performance on one of many stages, purchase a custom t-shirt and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, or just party with a purpose – all for a good cause!  Either way, we hope to see you there.

For information on tickets, location, performances and exhibiting artists please visit designforhumanity.com.  Doors open at 7pm and performances end at 1am.

Can’t make it?  Don’t worry.  Sukhjit and I will be there to cover it all.  Be sure to follow us on facebook and twitter for live updates and photos and check back next week for a full recap on the night’s events including video of performances, behind-the-scenes setup, interviews and more.
