VAIO News: Recent Tour Stop Recaps + a Contest for You

By: | Posted: 8/25/2010

As you’ve been reading, we’ve been up and down both coasts with Billabong on their High Five Movie Tour.  And as we roll into the end of August, we’ve approached our final two tour stops.

To begin, we drove into Newport Beach for a unique screening at the historic Lido Theater.  Opening its doors for the first time in 1938, the theater continues on to this day and stands as an authentically rare relic from the glamour of 1930’s Hollywood.  Plus, being only a block away from the ocean and with surfers of all ages calling Newport Beach their home, the Lido has evolved into the surf film capital of Southern California running a full schedule of classic and new surf films.

With so much character the theater offered the perfect backdrop for a screening of High Five and to kick things off right, guitarist Wally P (right) – who contributed to the film’s soundtrack – performed live before the film began.

From Newport Beach, we then landed in San Diego for our final stop.  Home to countless popular beaches, San Diego seemed like the ideal place to wrap things up.  To celebrate the successful summer tour we headed downtown to Quality Social for one last hurrah and screening.

As always, we brought a camera crew along to both events to record all the fun and capture the reaction of Collin J. (left) – the second fan to win a new W Series in our three stop homestretch.  Check out his reaction and all the highlights from the past two events in the clips below.  You can also find photos from all the events on our flickr page and keep reading after the video for your chance to win free stuff.

Now for the best part. Because not all of our readers live in Southern California, we wanted to ensure you didn’t feel left out from all the excitement.  So, starting today, we’ll be giving away 2 Imperial Lime W Series PCs and 10 Billabong boardshorts to some lucky fans.

Here’s how it works. Simply answer all 3 pop quiz questions below correctly by leaving your answers in the comment section.  If you get stuck you can find hints to the answers by clicking the link to the related story.  Next Friday, September 3rd,  we’ll close the contest and randomly select 2 grand prize winners and 10 boardshort winners from the lot of those who answered all 3 questions correctly.  We’ll announce the winners as a follow up to this post shortly thereafter.  Good luck and be sure to let us know what you thought of the movie if you saw it!

Video Recap – Design For Humanity Event

By: | Posted: 6/25/2010

Two weeks ago, the VAIO team headed to L.A. to support Design For Humanity – Billabong’s annual charity event.  If you’ve seen the new boardshort-inspired W Series, you know we’ve partnered with Billabong to create the design.  We also featured the colorful new VAIO at the charity event.

Find out more about the event, the charity and what inspired the design of the Imperial Lime W Series in this behind-the-scenes look at the Design For Humanity charity event by our very own Sony Electronics video blogger, Sukhjit.

Join Us at the Design For Humanity Event and Make a Difference

By: | Posted: 6/10/2010

Last week we kicked off the unofficial start of summer by partnering with surf wear apparel brand Billabong to bring you a limited edition, boardshort-inspired design for the W Series.

All of us here on the VAIO team are so excited to be working with Billabong – and not just because a lot of us need new boardshorts.  In fact, to build on the partnership, Sony is participating in Billabong’s Design For Humanity event today – June 10th – in L.A. and we hope you’ll join us.

Design For Humanity was founded by Billabong and began as an opportunity for Billabong’s marketing, art and design teams to come together and give back to a non-profit cause close to their hearts.

This year, Design For Humanity will benefit Invisible Children – an inspired non-profit with an even more inspiring story.

In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers from Southern California traveled to Africa in search of a story.  What started out as a filmmaking adventure for them transformed into much more when they uncovered a tragedy were children are both the weapons and the victims in a war raging in northern Uganda for the past 23 years.

The young filmmakers captured this tragic story and upon returning to the states created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” which has now been seen by millions.  The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?”  And to answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

Invisible children focuses on long-term goals that enable children to take responsibility for their future and the future of their country.  Their programs are carefully researched and developed initiatives that address the need for quality education, mentorships, the redevelopment of schools, resettlement from refugee camps and financial stability.

You can help their cause tonight.  The Design For Humanity event is an opportunity not only for Billabong but their retailers, partners, athletes, celebrities, artists and ultimately you.  On a lit runway, inspired by art, screaming for a live band, Design For Humanity is one night of celebrating, motivated by cause, presented in a way Billabong knows best.  By attending this event or purchasing a Design For Humanity product, know that you’ve made a difference.

So if you find yourself in the greater L.A. area tonight, swing by the Paramount Studios and meet the VAIO team.  Come ready to check out some amazing art exhibits, catch a live performance on one of many stages, purchase a custom t-shirt and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, or just party with a purpose – all for a good cause!  Either way, we hope to see you there.

For information on tickets, location, performances and exhibiting artists please visit designforhumanity.com.  Doors open at 7pm and performances end at 1am.

Can’t make it?  Don’t worry.  Sukhjit and I will be there to cover it all.  Be sure to follow us on facebook and twitter for live updates and photos and check back next week for a full recap on the night’s events including video of performances, behind-the-scenes setup, interviews and more.

Sony Struts its Stuff at Fashion Week

By: | Posted: 2/16/2010

If you’re in New York for Fashion Week, one of the most chic events of the year, you’re about to see even more proof that beautiful electronics have as much style and design as a couture ensemble.

Few products turn heads like the Sony VAIO and Sony VAIOs are sure to catch the gaze of geeks and fashionistas as they are featured at the William Rast fashion show on Wednesday night. William Rast, the “New America” denim lifestyle brand, was founded by Sony spokesman Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala.

In addition to VAIOs being strutted down the cat walk, Sony will provide a live stream of the event to William Rast stores nationwide and on WilliamRast.com beginning at 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Attendees at the show will have every opportunity to live blog as they admire what’s being shown. So if you’re not able to attend, watch the show online and be part of the back channel fashion chatter by following the #WRastSony on Twitter.

For information regarding on-line live streaming and in-store events, please visit: www.williamrast.com/acloserlookfromsony.

More Sony At Fashion Week

Sony’s new MP4 bloggie™ camera is also making its NY Fashion Week debut thanks to Model Lounge.  The Model Lounge NY has been outfitted with bloggie cameras and VAIOs. The models hanging out or preparing for shows have new Sony bloggie pocket cameras to document their Fashion Week experience in 1080p HD MP4 video and 5-megapixel photos. If you’re a fan of reality fashion shows, then you’ll want to tune in to see the behind the scenes moments from the fashion world beauties at www.modelloungenyc.com.

And finally, fashion photography is an art of its own and if you are at Fashion Week this year, stop by a photo exhibition by celebrity photographer Matthew Jordan Smith. Smith is part of Sony Electronics’ professional photography program called the “Artisans of Imagery” and the show features large prints of select runway looks before they appear on the pages of top fashion magazines. Smith shoots with Sony’s full-frame DSLR-A900 camera, which is designed to deliver ultra-fine picture quality. Complete information on the designers, program schedule and sponsors can be found at the official website, www.elle.com/style360.

If you’re lucky enough to make it to Fashion Week in person, let us know what you think of the Sony gear you see.  Twitpics are always welcome, so send them to us real time @sonyelectronics on twitter. I’ll be tuning in to the William Rast show online and look forward to seeing your point of view.
