Video Demo of the Reader Daily Edition in Wireless Mode

By: | Posted: 1/05/2010

Since we posted our first article about the new Reader Daily Edition back in August, we’ve gotten a ton of responses on our blog. We also saw a flurry of excitement when our resident video blogger from Sony Electronics, Sukhjit, posted a first time look at the Reader Daily on YouTube. Since then, we’ve been working on getting our hands on a Reader Daily so we could give you an in-depth look at the newest edition to the Reader family including 3G wireless connectivity. This video features our resident expert Matt Shenker where he takes you through a full unboxing and powering up of the Reader Daily Edition. I find unboxing videos helpful since I get to see all the components included in the box and get a better sense of a product without having to leave my chair. Since we only had the unit for about an hour, we taped feverishly to show you as much as we could. This is really our first unboxing video at Sony Style and I’m always open to your feedback so if you’d like to see more (or less or different) videos like this, let me know and we’ll get taping.

You can see more of the Reader Daily on our website or if you’d like to get a sense of it in person, we have demo units available at your local Sony Style store. If you have any questions on the Daily, don’t hesitate to ask by posting a comment. Happy reading.

Personalize the Sony Gifts you Give: Sony Reader

By: | Posted: 11/30/2009

One of the Sony products I get asked about the most is the Sony Reader. In fact, over the Thanksgiving holiday my college-age nephew dropped some not-so-subtle hints about the Sony Daily Edition Reader

Apparently his text books have gotten heavier, his college library has fewer books than ever and (he claims) he would read a lot more if he could get what he needed on an electronic reader. These all sound like good reasons to me and I’m thrilled not to have to guess on at least one gift I will give this year.

As part of our series on how to personalize the Sony gifts you give, I talked with Ranson again from Sony Style about how to add a book or two to the Reader before you gift it. That way, you’re not only giving a great gift but also adding a personal touch by including a book you or the recipient will like. Want to get some free books? Find out where and learn about the features that make the Reader stand out in the video below.

I think I’ll add some classics to my nephew’s new Sony Reader… or a graphic novel or two. If you are getting a Reader for yourself of someone else this season, what are you putting on it?

This is the second in a series of five videos on personalizing the Sony gifts you give.  See what’s new with Sony Walkman Stereo and get tips on adding music to it from the first video in the series. Check back for more gift guides in the days ahead.

Here are the links Ranson mentions in the video:

Reader Daily Edition Makes Pre-Sales Splash on SonyStyle.com

By: | Posted: 11/18/2009

There’s always a fun process that happens when a celebrity baby is born. First it’s the ticker at the bottom of a news screen. Then, after utter anticipation, the first photos are published. Some people knock this, but I love it. I love that moment when I can finally catch a glimpse, jeleously gasp in the fact that they’re almost always stunning and then begin to chat about it with my girlfriends.

Well for literary gadget lovers, today is all about our own celebrity baby and like a proud mamma, I have to say our designers delivered him (or her!) in Sony Style…The highly-anticipated wireless Reader Daily Edition is now available for pre-order on SonyStyle.com. Shipments arrive next month.

New Daily EditionWith access to Sony’s eBookstore from most anywhere in the U.S., the Reader Daily Edition uses  3G mobile broadband connectivity to let you browse, purchase and download books (as well as various newspapers and magazines). My favorite part of all this is that there are zero monthly fees or transaction charges for the basic wireless connectivity and owners still have the option to side load personal docs & content from other Reader friendly sites via USB. Other features include a menu-driven, seven-inch touch screen panel, note taking/highlighting capabilities (along with note export/print capabilities for easy reference) and an onboard Oxford American English Dictionary that allows you to look up a word by simply tapping on it.

So there’s a little info on our new baby, let’s talk delivery… The Reader Daily joins its brothers and sisters, The Reader Touch and Pocket Editions on a brand new Sony Reader section of our website.

New Main Reader Page: It’s now a quick, animated summary view of the various models, pricing and colors.

Hot Spot Info: Click your mouse on one of the colored hot spots and get instant info on the Reader’s features.

Multi-View Rotate Tool: You can click the rotate button to get side angle, front and back views

Hand Size Simulations: My favorite new feature. Now at first glance, disembodied hands could be a little creepy (which is why they chose to illustrate them – no hands were disembodied during the making of this site) but once you start to play with the tool, it’s just brilliant. So many people have asked me about how this fits in big hands, small hands, etc. After passing the feedback along, our design team approached the challenge in a way I never would have imagined.

eBook Store
We had gotten a lot of feedback about better integrating with the eBook store. It made perfect sense and now you can browse through the best sellers list in a grid. Click on any book to get more info. You can even make this full screen.
This is just a few of the new features we’ve added so you’re ganna have to check it out for yourself. And as you can see, a lot of these new features were inspired by comments on this blog around what you like, don’t like and would love to see so keep the feedback coming. It might be illustrated hands now, but you never know what the design team will come up with next.

Sony Reader Reinvents Mall Kiosks

By: | Posted: 11/17/2009

I love going to malls. Mostly because I like to shop but I also enjoy discovering new stores and previewing the newest items I’ve read about. Plus I have to say, the best strawberry lemonade is at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego.

The one thing I don’t do or love to do is cruise by the mall kiosks. My image of mall kiosks include vivid images of hair extensions, strange caps and random glittery mobiles. It’s always that awkward and extremely anxious moment when I make eye contact with the mall kiosk rep on my way by and before they open their mouth to ask me if I’m interested in trying out the latest skin cream made from fire ants, I’ve either looked down at my shoes or desperately opened my mobile.

Well today, my impression of what a mall kiosk is has utterly and completely changed. And not just because I work for Sony (I would have just not written this post if I didn’t seriously enjoy the experience) but because I got to check out one of 40 new Sony Reader Experience kiosks that started popping up across the United States this week.

No natural supplements, no crazy calendars. Just pure gadget glory.

The Sony Reader Experience kiosk reminds me a lot of what you’d see at an electronics show. It’s clean, polished and staffed with really passionate and knowledgeable staff. Sony Reader specialists staffing the kiosks are trained to answer a wide range questions: from your technical specs to the latest and greatest ebooks. The latest Readers models are on display (even in different colors) along with their respective accessories like covers, lights and headphones. You can also watch the resident panel expert for Reader, Amy Sedaris on a Bravia LCD.

Planning and creating these kiosks wasn’t an easy task and involved hundreds of folks here at Sony. The kiosks are designed in a station-like way allowing customers to cruise through different pods and enjoyvarious Sony Reader models and features. The Reader team shared some of the preliminary sketches for the kiosk design…

You’ll also be happy to hear that if you don’t live near a Sony Style store, not to fret. These kiosks are independent of the stores so chances are, you might have one at your local mall. I personally had the chance to visit the Fashion Valley location as it was going up.

One of my favorite little secrets to tell is that if you live in the San Diego area, some of our senior executive will actually be working the kiosks as they too want to interact with customers and rally around the excitement of these latest gadgets. They want your feedback so that they can take your voice back to headquarters to truly represent.
So if you happen to cross paths with a mall kiosk, look up instead of speeding by. It might be a refreshing change from the old guard and turn out to be a high tech super Reader experience. If you do visit one of our Sony Reader Experience kiosks or have a scary mall kiosk story you’ve experienced in the past, feel free to post a comment and share.
