Sony & Pogoplug Make Sharing AVCHD™ Files Easy

By: | Posted: 5/04/2011

The term “cloud computing” is quickly becoming part of the everyday lexicon but for many people the definition of cloud computing is still well…a little cloudy.

So here is the basic definition. It’s when your data doesn’t reside on your local computer but you can use it like it was on your local computer. Leveraging the world of cloud computing gives you an easy way to share files or stream video throughout your home network and to your friends & family privately; a nice alternative to posting on Facebook® or YouTube™.

Enter Pogoplug. They provide software & devices that create your own personal “cloud” without subscription fees or size limits. Now enter Sony. We partnered with Pogoplug to help ensure compatibility with the latest HD video formats. Their newest gadget, Pogoplug Video, is optimized to work with Sony’s AVCHD camera products (like Handycam® Camcorders) to make AVCHD files streamable. For many taking AVCHD files and converting them to a format anyone can view can be a little tricky. This takes the work out of it.

To learn a little more about the partnership, where to buy and how Pogoplug works with Sony products, check out our SGNL by Sony video or visit the website.

**A Special Message From Pogoplug*****

Dear Pogoplug Video User,

Cloud Engines, Inc. is recalling all Pogoplug Video units (Pogo-P11, Pogo-P12, Pogo-P13, and Pogo-P14) that it has distributed.  We have received reliable reports that units have overheated, with flames possibly issuing from the unit in at least one instance.  We do not know whether this condition affects some or all units and therefore are seeking the immediate return of all units in distributor and retailer inventory and from consumers.  Please safely eject your hard drives and unplug your unit immediately.  Note that this recall does not affect any other Pogoplug products, including Pogoplug, Pogoplug Pro, or Pogoplug Biz.  For more detail, please see: http://blog.pogoplug.com/.

For those of you who purchased Pogoplug Video, please collect your proof of purchase and device.  We will be in touch shortly regarding the return process.  Please address any questions to videorecall@cloudengines.com.

Welcome to the New Sony Blog

By: | Posted: 5/04/2010

We’ve been diligently working behind the scenes and are thrilled to be able to introduce our new blog to you. As you can see, a lot has changed. The most obvious difference is that we’ve combined the Sony Electronics Community site, VAIO Community site and the Sony Style blog into one place.

Since January, we’ve been working hard coding, designing, merging and all that jazz in order to bring our readers a better unified experience. This blog is focused around all things Sony including news, products, events and customer stories. And that’s just an example.

Our new design now lets us feature more at the top of the page for first time readers and introduces our long time loyalists to new Sony offsite destinations (like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube). In addition to posting our own stuff, we’re hoping to feature more of our users by giving props to the hundreds of test videos, unboxings, amazing photos, and other cool Sony-related things we uncover across the net.

Our development team busted behind to build modules you can’t find on any other blog out there. At the same time, we’re not out there to reinvent the wheel. Our goal was to better organize our content to make it easier for you to discover the Sony stuff you enjoy most. There are dozens of new elements to the site but here’s a little tour of the main features we’ve added in.

By the way…we are still working out the kinks of our new blog so we beg for your forgiveness in advance and ask for your patience as we iron out any issues.

New Design

After a few revisions and a couple of late night,s we arrived at a design that we feel strikes an optimal balance between the spirit and sophistication of the Sony brand , in combination with a fantastic and personable blogging experience.

When approaching the design for the new blog, we began the process by considering multiple variations of layout and content organization. The design process focused on creating large areas devoted to showcasing imagery, slideshows and other types of media (like video), while even pulling in content from outside sites like Flickr, YouTube, and Twitter.

We felt like these elements would provide our readers with a more impactful and richer reading experience. Legibility was also a key focus of our design, so in addition to providing generous amounts of whitespace in content heavy areas, we also increased font sizes for easy and enjoyable reading. Another core element of the design system includes a modular right navigation bar – a persistent element on the site that not only provides easy access to a variety of content types but also allows us to effectively surface current topics you might be interested in. Visually, the design of the navigation bar is contrasted against the lighter pages, helping to separate the two areas and allow folks to focus on either reading or navigating without confusing the two.

New Features

Our monumental change is the fact that the Sony Electronics, Sony VAIO and Sony Style communities/blogs are now one but we’ve also added some other fancy features.

  • More Ways to Comment: We realized that we had a lot of guest comments on our previous blogs and so we wanted to make it easier for people to post a comment. Now can sign in using your Facebook along with guest commenting. This portion is still under construction as we’re working hard to  add Twitter and Sony Style log in options. These are coming soon!
  • New Video and Photo Area: While our old blogs had some areas to feature photos and video, the majority of the media were items we posted ourselves. This new section not only displays our own photos & videos from our YouTube and Flickr pages but it also is a place for use to feature cool photos and video we find out there relating to Sony products. This might just be your 15 minutes of fame (although I would personally argue that winning millions in the lotto would be a much better 15 minutes).
  • New Twitter Stream Page: From what’s happening at the latest trade show to new products now on sale to exclusive coupons, our new Twitter page pulls in tweets from the @SonyElectronics & @SonyOutletUSA pages. If you’re not a follower of these pages, you can always see what’s happening here.
  • Cool New Side Nav with Widgets: To help make it easier for you to find posts you’re interested in, we’ve reorganized our topics a tad. Now you can locate info on new products, events and even learn a tip or two. Additionally our developers coded a kickin archive app that lets you easily view our historical articles at a glance before diving in.

Now these are just a few of what we’ve added and the beauty of this blog is that we’re building this for you. If there are things you’d like to see tell us. We want to know your feedback. Thanks to all our readers across our old blogs and we look forward to introducing you to all the editors.  Welcome to the new Sony blog and we hope you enjoy.

New Headphone Line Appears On Sony Style

By: | Posted: 4/21/2010

Sony’s new PIIQ™ headphones quietly made an appearance on Sony Style’s website this week. If a fashion maven met a techno geek, the new PIIQ line would be their offspring. If you cruise the net these days for a set of headphones, often you need to decide between cosmetics and sound quality. Very different from the headphones you’d see in an airplane catalog, PIIQ breaks the mold by combining fashion, function and renowned Sony sound quality into 5 new models.

The neon skinned gizmos come with a new web presence that gives users a close up and personal demo of the design and features of each of the PIIQ headphones. Select a portion of the headphones and watch the suspended arm  tinker with the headphones (I promise there is a person attached to the arm). A helpful upfront look second to holding them yourself.

What I personally like about these headphones is that you can pick up any of these items for under $100(excluding tax & shipping of course). Some as low as $15. Here’s a little highlight.

First up are the Marqii™ headphones: these cush headphones feature 40mm drivers for powerful bass and supreme sound. A padded headband keeps the comfort and an adjustable headband locks in place and comes with a detachable cord.

Giiq™ headphones – 30MM drivers pump the bass while neodymium magnets deliver rich, full sound. This model features a cush headband, soft ear pads, and a skinned cord. The shape is aimed at total smoothness with even the hinges covered in elastomer. Each color (Multi, Gray & Green) comes with a unique colorful design.

Triqii™ headphones – These headphones are designed for durability. Carrying a simple yet flexible design. The headband and housing is specially coated to help resist impacts and scratches. Even the sliding mechanism is hidden inside the headband for added strength.

Qlasp™ earbuds - Engineered to stay in your ear no matter what you’re doing, these high-quality Qlasp™ buds complement even the most extreme lifestyle. The 9mm drivers produce brilliant sound while the soft clip-on earbuds ensure a comfortable fit without slippage.

Exhale™ earbuds – Features a bass booster earpiece with sound ports and 13.5mm drivers for big bass and powerful sound.

Take a look at our new line and let me know what you think. It’s a different side of Sony coming out here that I think you’ll enjoy meeting.

Announcing the New VAIO Compact Palladium Notebook

By: | Posted: 4/01/2010

Today marks the announcement of the VAIO Compact Palladium Notebook, our newest addition to the VAIO Signature Collection, exclusively seen at SonyStyle.com. This limited edition model boasts the latest in futuristic computing.

Measuring 7.5” in diameter, the Palladium is feature packed with advanced, patented technologies light-years past the everyday notebooks you’d experience today.

This macho machine incorporates the latest in 4D viewing experiences. Mist, vibrations, and odors enhance the 4D sensory effort transforming your normal movie and gaming experiences into the real thing. Rev up your appetite while you stand alongside cooking show chefs or test your neighborhood watch by watching a horror film (safety gear is required).

For the wicked queen in all of us, the Palladium is the first notebook which includes Mirror Mode. Now with this unique Signature Collection notebook, you no longer need to stare at yourself while passing store windows. With a simple swipe of the keyboard your computer screen transforms into a lighted mirror. The designers also recognized the importance of vanity and self-consciousness by including the “auto-airbrush” function. Enabling this function instantly airbrushes your mirrored reflection giving you the illusion of being the fairest of them all. In this mode, you truly look your best.

An ode to Trekkies (for me it’s TNG or nothing), “Beam me up” goes literal thanks to the integrated hologram webcam. Position the cam on the object (human or otherwise), and it’s projected into the base of the Palladium’s keyboard. For those feeling left out, record and playback settings are included in the event you need help and a certain someone is your only hope.

And those are just a few benefits of the Palladium.

Other unique features such as a breath powered battery and a Hover Touch keyboard are also included in the unit. For more feature info, gallery photos, and most importantly pricing, you can checkout VAIO Compact Palladium Notebook’s page on SonyStyle.com. It even includes a hidden special offer for visitors to the page. Act fast. It’s only up for an extremely limited time.

Oh one last thing. You didn’t think we’d just let today go by did you?
