A group of about 30 blogging moms attending a recent Reader meetup at the Sony Style Store in New York were among the first to get a peek at the beautifully designed new line of Sony Readers, announced to the world just yesterday.
The new Reader Pocket Edition™, Reader Touch Edition™ and wireless Reader Daily Edition™ (available in the U.S.) were unveiled with a sleek aluminum design, reduced size and weight and new features that had the crowd take notice. There were literally “oohs” and “ahhs” over the new design, one mom even shouted out “awesomely sexy!”
The group, gathered to see Sarah Wendel a Romance book blogger were surprised with a first glance at the new line of Readers.
All of the new models will now sport an optical touch screen so turning pages can be done with a light swipe of the finger or touch of a stylus pen. Reader users have made sure to let us know how much they enjoyed the full touch screen on the Reader Touch Edition and Daily Edition models and now all three models will have an even more responsive touch screen, which by the way, is also great for taking notes and doodling.
Along with the new devices, Sony also announced Reader™ Desktop Edition (formerly Reader Library) for Apple’s Mac OS X and Microsoft® Windows® and Reader™ Mobile Edition for Apple iPhone and Google Android-based smartphones so you can sync your reading among multiple devices. These free applications will be available later this year.
All three Readers will have improved E Ink which delivers a paper-like screen display that is readable in direct sunlight, and offers a high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale to ensure that text and images are crisp and easy to read. You’ll also notice features like adjustable contrast and brightness control.
Check out the Reader Store for improvements and browse the more than 1.2 million titles that are available in the U.S. You can also keep up to date with news from the Reader Store by joining Facebook.com/SonyReaderStore.

The new Reader Pocket Edition and the new Reader Touch Edition are available immediately at SonyStyle.com and Sony Style stores but the new Reader Daily Edition will have to go on your wish list as it’s expected to be available in time for the holidays. For now, stop by a Sony Style Store, test out the new readers and let us know what you think. And, when you see an event from Sony Electronics, sign up!

It is now late September and the Touch is still not available on line or in stores. The pocket is, but not the touch.

It looks better than the Kindle. I wonder how the touchscreen will compare.

“Available immediately” yeah right. Sonystyle says “Accepting Pre-orders” and all shops also say “mid/end September”. Really disappointed by this launch!
