PARK RIDGE, N.J., May 23, 2013 – Sony’s new interface unit allows 2K RAW and 4K RAW recording directly from the NEX-FS700 camcorder, giving professional users a significant jump in performance, a broader choice of creative tools and unprecedented production flexibility. The NEX-IFR5 interface unit connects the NEX-FS700 to Sony’s new AXS-R5 RAW recording system, creating a powerful combination that takes full advantage of the camcorder’s 4K imager.

“The FS700 is already accepted worldwide as a high-performance production tool for everything from documentaries to commercials to features,” said Peter Crithary, marketing manager for large sensor technology, Sony Electronics. “Now, highly affordable recording of 2K and 4K RAW images and high frame rate capture adds another dimension to the camcorder’s capabilities. FS700 RAW recording preserves more of the original camera signal, producing stunning image quality and enabling maximum image manipulation flexibility in post.”

The NEX-IFR5 interface receives the uncompressed bit-stream carrying RAW sensor data, metadata, timecode and start/stop commands from the NEX-FS700U via 3G-SDI. The FS700 RAW files are recorded to the AXS memory cards in the AXS-R5 RAW recorder, where they can be screened and converted using Sony’s free RAW Viewer software.

Users can simultaneously record 4K on the AXS-R5 while recording HD on the NEX-FS700, both with identical, start frame, stop frame and time code.

The unit has an LCD panel for status indication including record mode, frame rate, timecode and battery and media remaining time. Large, tactile buttons control basic operation, menu and media management. When attached to the NEX-IFR5, the AXS-R5 can also act as a stand-alone playback unit for confidence monitoring and review through an on-board HD SDI 422 output.

The introduction of the NEX-IFR5 interface unit is the first implementation of 2K RAW recording capability with the AXSM memory system. 2K RAW provides all the benefits of RAW — wide color gamut, full sensor latitude and flexible digital image manipulation — but at a cost efficient 2K resolution. 2K RAW enables the NEX-FS700 to create digital RGB files with 12-bit color depth, and also works simultaneously with the camera’s on-board 8-bit AVC-HD capability. This gives productions the freedom to choose the recording file format that best matches scene content and budget, and the flexibility to archive HD, 2K or 4K recordings.

With the NEX-IFR5, NEX-FS700 users can perform continuous 120/240fps high frame rate recording in 2K and 120 fps four-second “burst” recording in 4K. The NEX-FS700 even goes beyond 120 frames per second to 240fps. Playing back at 240fps yields compelling slow motion at 1/5 or 1/10 normal speed. Users can also choose 480 and 960fps burst recording (at reduced resolution) for even more creative possibilities. HFR is also now available with S-Log2 Gamma.

“Previously, HFR capability (above 60fps@1080p) was relegated to a rarified few “custom” cameras, many designed for machine vision and not high end program production,” said Crithary. “The combination of the NEX-FS700, NEX-IFR5 and AXS-R5 now supports an array of game changing speeds in continuous and burst shooting modes at a price point unmatched in the industry. With these new capabilities the NEX-FS700 is poised for use as a high-quality, low-cost camera for HFR.”

The NEX-IFR5 also allows the use of compatible media, file naming conventions, metadata and the RAW workflow used by Sony’s PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CineAlta 4K cameras.

This new Sony technology is the latest recording option for the NEX-FS700 camcorder, joining the recently announced direct connectivity with Convergent Design’s new Odyssey7Q.

The NEX-IFR5 2K/4K RAW interface unit will be available in June for a suggested list price of $2,500.

SAN DIEGO, May 20, 2013 – In support of its new 4K Ultra HD TVs shipping this week, Sony Electronics today launched an integrated marketing campaign celebrating the stunning color and picture resolution of 4K.

The campaign features Garth Davis, who most recently co-directed Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed miniseries Top of the Lake. After seeing Sony’s amazing 4K picture quality on a Sony 4K Ultra HD TV at the Sundance Film Festival, Davis was inspired to make a 4K film to allow viewers to see deeper into his imagination. Working alongside Academy Award winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC, the commercial spot encompassing Davis’ vision was shot on the Sony F65 and F55 professional 4K cameras. Native 4K footage from the shoot will be showcased at retail next month where it can be enjoyed in its finest detail on Sony 4K TVs.

“The Sony 4K Ultra HD TV really is a new way of looking at things, a new visual language. There is so much detail, it’s almost like you can walk into the picture,” said Davis. “One of the things unique to the TV is color. And the story we’ve been creating for this project is about celebrating color in lots of ways. With Sony 4K we are working at the highest end of technology and creativity.”

“It is so nice to have a larger color gamut to work with in 4K,” added Miranda. “You can extract more information and show what you may not have seen before on a TV. Working with Sony 4K truly opens up the possibilities.”

A broadcast spot starts airing this week nationally (view it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhcvCZtNW9s), accompanied by digital, print and radio ads, mobile media and experiential events as well as retail point-of-purchase and interactive displays. Sony will also spread the word about the new 4K Ultra HD TVs through social networks, email, direct mail, and free standing inserts.

“The campaign calls out the enhanced quality of anything one would watch on a Sony 4K TV with a picture that is four times clearer than full HD,” said Patrick Bewley, vice president of Brand Experience & Visual Design at Sony Electronics. “It’s the highest resolution, most immersive experience Sony has ever created, and in order to experience it, you must see it in person to believe it.”

Consumers can see and experience the new Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs at a Sony Store or Magnolia Home Theater at Best Buy.

The focus on 4K is the first piece of a year-long campaign that showcases emerging and established collaborators who have been inspired by Sony technology to create unique and unforgettable stories and Sony brand experiences. All aspects of this campaign were developed with the support of Sony Electronics’ advertising agency 180 Los Angeles.

About Sony X Headphones:

With their pressure-relieving memory foam ear pads, the X Headphones conform to each user’s unique ear shape, providing a highly effective acoustic seal and preventing sound leakage. In addition to reinforcing the headphones’ powerful sub-bass reproduction capability, the ear pads deliver a supportive, cushy feel, ideal for maximum long-term comfort. The X Headphones look as great as they perform with their color-accented headbands, swivel mechanisms and end caps. Their dual folding style allows the user to swivel the noise isolating ear pads for listening flexibility, as well as conveniently fold the headphones into an included sleek carrying case for hassle-free portability. Featuring grooved serrations on its surface, the X Headphones’ high-quality cord provides an innovative design that eliminates friction between cable surfaces, reducing the incidence of frustrating tangles.

About Jacob’s Ghost™:

In 1795, Jim Beam’s founding distiller Jacob Beam embarked on a bold tradition of distilling white whiskey. Now, 218 years later, we’ve perfected Jacob’s legacy with the Beam family’s newest whiskey – Jacob’s Ghost. While Jacob’s Ghost is a clear whiskey, it isn’t moonshine or un-aged white dog. It’s a one-of-a-kind, bold, aged whiskey, made from the same mash bill that Jacob started with, and then rested for at least one year in white oak barrels and crafted to be uniquely versatile, flavorful and unlike any other white whiskey.

While Jacob’s Ghost can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or as a chilled shot, white whiskey is especially versatile in any number of traditional whiskey cocktails, creative new variations, or cocktails that are typically made with white spirits such as vodka or tequila.

PARK RIDGE, N.J., May 15, 2013 – Making “Sticks & Stones” was personally rewarding for Kate Rees Davies and Steve Romano. Having the film about childhood bullying make it to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival added a nice touch of critical recognition.

“The subject matter is so important,” said Rees Davies. “Being at Cannes is wonderful news all around. The festival is great exposure for the film, for us, the cast and the crew.”

Also, she added, great exposure for the Sony F65 digital motion picture camera that Rees Davies and Romano used to produce “Sticks.” The short film was the team’s first F65 experience and also their first digital cinematography effort. Both came away thoroughly impressed by the technology, with an appreciation of how the Sony flagship camera is a perfect fit even for low-budget productions. Rees Davies and Romano will use the F65 again on their next collaboration, “The Vanished,” scheduled to begin production in September.

Director/producer Kate Rees Davies with the Sony F65 camera, on the set of “Sticks & Stones.” The short film is a finalist at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

“The F65 is amazingly well-developed,” Rees Davies said. “This camera is very simple to use and the workflow is very straightforward.”

She describes the camera as ideal for lower-budget projects, because of its jack-of-all-trades flexibility.

“This camera adapts to so many different scenarios so well,” she said. “You don’t need complex lighting set-ups; practical light is often more than sufficient. We had a very small budget, very little lighting and no technical support on hand. We basically had to figure it out as we went along – and we did, with great success.”

Since “Sticks” wrapped, she and Romano have worked together on two other projects. When “The Vanished” begins production, they’re looking forward to the F65 capturing the same feel that made “Sticks & Stones” so special. Romano expects the camera’s capabilities to again play a large part in telling their story, for example, being able to shoot mixed light interiors easily, and matching a sunny day with rainy day scenes.

“This camera handles anything you throw at it,” he said. “The colors are intense, and then once you start to bring content into post, you have the tremendous freedom to be able to tweak colors and make things match perfectly.”

Romano noted that in addition to image quality, the F65 presents a crew with the total package for getting a shoot done easily and on time. “Just having built-in NDs is really great,” he said, “since it saves so much time on set, as far as not having to throw a filter on.”

“The Vanished” will tell the story of Mexican immigrants and their often treacherous journey through deserts to reach Los Angeles — the ones who make it and those who don’t. Much like the “Sticks” project, shooting conditions will vary greatly from outdoors to indoors and day to night.

“We plan on doing a lot of crane shots and time lapse so we will definitely put the camera through its paces at all times of the day, relying heavily on natural light,” Rees Davies said. “I’m excited to see what it can do.”

Rees Davies and Romano are also eagerly anticipating the newest enhancements enabled by the F65’s latest software update.

“I really want to capture the diversity of the desert,” she said, “from its desperation and harshness to its scariness and incredible beauty.”

Romano added, “Then, when we get to Los Angeles, we’ll be doing a lot of street scenes and interior shots. The F65 is perfect for this project. Its latitude is incredible, which helps it adapt seamlessly to all our different shooting conditions.”

“Sticks & Stones” is Rees Davies’ second Cannes entry, but her plan is that it’s only the first of many more she’ll shoot with the F65.

“Being an independent pioneer for this technology is very exciting for us,” she said. “As a director, it’s truly exhilarating to have access to such a high-end camera, so early on in my career. The F65 can really do some serious stuff!”

“Sticks & Stones” will be featured in The Short Film Corner at Cannes, which opened this week.
LOS ANGELES, April 25, 2013 – At a special listening event today, Sony Electronics debuted new products from its 2013 Shelf System and Personal Audio lines. Available May 27, the products exemplify Sony’s legendary commitment to music and sound, and are packed with easy to use connectivity and accessibility features.

“Music is the soundtrack of our lives, and for generations Sony has delivered innovative, fun devices for sharing music as a part of most every social occasion,” said Andrew Sivori, vice president product marketing, Sony Electronics’ Home Entertainment & Sound division. “Our newest audio products not only deliver explosive sound, but do so with easy connectivity and built-in lights ready to start the celebration at any time.”

A Sound Machine You Not Only Hear, but See and Feel

The RDH-GTK37iP portable sound system is a 420 Watt mega-boombox party on-the-go, with connectivity features designed to get the party started with OneTouch. Simply touch Near-Field Communications (NFC) enabled mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets to the sound system to quickly and easily stream your favorite music. Devices without NFC capabilities can still connect easily through the system’s built-in Bluetooth. Additionally, a front USB input connects MP3 players and flash drives, and an integrated docking system accommodates iPod and iPhone devices with ease.

Music is powered through a 2-way bass reflex speaker system with dual subwoofers, delivering 420 Watts total RMS power to ears in the room and beyond, and EQ and DJ effect controls let you customize the sound and take over as MC. But, the party doesn’t stop just there, as the system speakers also incorporate multicolored LED/strobe lights to display illumination effects, turning any room into the hottest club. Priced at $349, the RDG-GTK37iP boombox will be available at Sony Stores and http://store.sony.com, as well as electronics retailers nationwide.

High Wattage Mini Systems Let the Neighbors Know the Block Party Has Started

Last year Sony brought more than a little shake, rattle and roll into its music lineup with the LBT-SH2000 high wattage mini system, a 2000 Watt powerhouse that gained king of the hill status in cities nationwide for its ability to deliver disruptive sound. Joining it in this year’s lineup are the new LBT-GPX55 and LBT-GPX77 mini systems. Boasting 1600 and 1800 wall shaking Watts respectively, the LBT-GPX55 and LBT-DPXX77 mini systems both feature 3-way speaker systems and a single disc CD player, as well as dual front USB inputs for use with MP3 players and flash drives and also include Bluetooth audio streaming with simple NFC OneTouch pairing.

Both products feature EQ and DJ effects controls, letting consumers develop and customize their own signature sound, and the Sony Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) restores life to compressed MP3 files. Like the RDH-GTK37iP system, the LBT-GPX77 model has selectable multicolored LED illumination to pulse with the music.

Starting at $499 for the LBT-GPX55, both mini-systems are available at Sony stores and http://store.sony.com, and electronics retailers nationwide.
