Net Neutrality Effects How You Connect

By: | Posted: 1/27/2010 | Posted in News & Announcements

Today you can watch YouTube videos on your VAIO or stream movies via Netflix on an Internet enabled BRAVIA television. A connected life is a convenience for many and the number of devices that get you online is growing substantially. With the right connection it’s a great experience. But we’ve all had the occasional misfortune of getting a slow or unpredictable download speed. It’s frustrating no matter how great the device. In fact it really might not depend on the device you’re using.

As part of the effort to support consumer’s rights to reliable access and use of the Internet, Sony Electronics President and COO, Stan Glasgow met with members of the Federal Communications Commission last week to talk about net neutrality. Sony Electronics has joined with companies like Google and Facebook in support of net neutrality, which would require current ISPs to treat sites and access equally.

Net neutrality would put a framework into place that would regulate ISPs and ensure they do not unfairly change or alter your access the content you want. Without a consistent framework, it might be difficult for Sony to provide the best user experience consumers expect from multiple broadband-enabled devices.

“What people want to do is to choose from a variety of consumer electronics and when they connect, they want to have a predictable and reliable experience,” Glasgow told The Washington Post last Friday.

“We’re just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of seeing demands for what people will want over broadband,” Glasgow added.

The net neutrality discussion started to heat up in October when the FCC asked for public comment on proposed net neutrality rules. The second round of the proceeding will begin in March and a decision on how to move forward will come shortly after.

You can also find more information on the future of the Internet from the FCC website.
