Few things give video pros and enthusiasts goose bumps like the chance to record beautiful scenes, work with interesting content and innovations in equipment. So, last May when we gave you a rare sneak peek at a video camera still in development you responded overwhelmingly with excitement and anticipation. Well, the wait is over. Today, I have official specs and availability to share with you on the new interchangeable lens HD Handycam camcorder called the NEX-VG10.
The scenes in the video above were shot in Bali by the new NEX-VG10. It shows just what it means to have interchangeable lenses – beautiful vistas with a shallow depth of field, crisp images of a subject while the background is artistically out of focus and rack focus on subjects switching from foreground to background. If you’ve used a DSLR camera for video, then you know these techniques can bump up your artistic expression by taking a nicely composed shot and turning it into something you’d see on your favorite travel show on TV.
Sony’s NEX-VG10, the world’s first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses, gives the options previously reserved for professional videographers to consumers. The newest member of the NEX series, it is equipped with the same ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor used in Sony’s “NEX-5” and “NEX-3” digital cameras. This sensor is approximately 19.5 times bigger than what you would find in conventional camcorders. Coupled with Sony’s powerful BIONZTM processor, photographers will be able to capture full 1920×1080/60i high definition video at up to 24Mbps for true cinematic Blu-ray quality.
The NEX-VG10 can use the rich selection of E-mount and A-mount lenses like the award winning Sony G and Carl Zeiss® lenses, with the use of an adapter sold separately. An E-mount 18-200mm 11x optical zoom lens comes with it, offering a powerful silent auto-focus system and Optical Steadyshot™ image stabilization with Active Mode.
Additionally, the NEX-VG10 utilizes a focal-plane shutter that allows you to enjoy incredible, true DSLR-like quality still images at up to 14 MP. You’ll even be able to catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to 7 fps.

Good audio is, and should always be, a concern for serious videographers. This camera sports four individual microphone capsules and advanced processing algorithms to mix sound, a technology called Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone. Directional microphones ensure subject audio is clear while background noise is minimized. Many of you have asked about mic input when we first released images of this camera, I’m happy to report that the NEX-VG10 has an input for an external mic and a headphone .
On the camera body, you’ll see a 3-inch swivel display and adjustable electronic viewfinder to help frame and monitor your images. Jog dial and hotkeys will make it easy to navigate menus and adjust shooting parameters like iris, shutter speed, gain and white balance. The NEX-VG10 accepts both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD media. When using a 32GB memory card you’ll be able to record up to three hours of high def footage at 1920×1080 at 24Mbps.
So here is the question I know you’re all wondering. When can I get the NEX-VG10 and how much is it going to cost? The NEX-VG10 will be available in September for about $2000 at Sony Style Stores and retailers around the country. If you just can’t wait (I’m in this boat) presales being today on SonyStyle.com.
For more videos including demonstrations of the lenses and audio capability take a look at the playlist below. You’ll recognize some of the beautiful scenes from Bali and see how they were captured using the NEX-VG10.

It’s rather inexcusable that this cam doesn’t have 24p capability. Even if it’s considered consumer grade, the option should be there, as there is always the chance a filmaker will have an interest in shooting in 24p.

Looks great but I when I read the online reviews etc, I did not find anyone stating the AUDIO was also adjustable (as opposed to automatic). Everything else on this camera is available to manual control. Does anyone know if the AUDIO is also?
