Sony® Reader® Library Education program expands

By: | Posted: 3/01/2011

It’s a sight you see more and more often in a place you might not expect, e-readers mingling with paperbacks in libraries across the United States. Electronic reading devices are spotted everywhere these days as more people want access to them and the content they deliver. Programs that cater to the digital world are springing up in local libraries too.

This week, Sony announced 30 more libraries will be added to the Sony Reader Library Program. We first told you about the program back in September, with the launch of the initial group of libraries. As part of the digital reading program, librarians and staff receive in-house training on digital reading devices, where they learn about digital reading formats, sources for digital materials, and how to use Sony’s Reader digital reading devices. The libraries also receive digital reading devices for staff to use for patron demonstrations.

“The Sony Reader Library Program has enabled our Library to successfully spread the word about digital books, and we have seen an unprecedented increase in use since the inception of this timely partnership,” said Kara Kohn of the Plainfield Public Library, one of the first round of 30 libraries included in the program.

Check out the list below to see if your local library will be launching the Sony Reader Program soon. If it’s not on the list, let your favorite librarian know about www.sony.com/libraryprogram.

Announcing the first US libraries to take part in the Sony Reader Library Program

By: | Posted: 9/28/2010

What do you picture when you hear the words “public library”? If shushing librarians and piles of dusty books come to mind, it’s time to rethink that image. You are now more likely to see electronic books in public libraries across the country and a legion of trained librarians ready to help you discover digital content and how to get it on your device.

Today,  Sony announced an inaugural group of 30 libraries from 17 states across the country that will take part in the Sony Reader Library Program. The program was introduced this summer to libraries looking to expand their digital reading services. During the next few weeks these libraries will get in-house training on digital reading devices, educational materials to help both librarians and library patrons learn more about eBooks and Sony Reader devices for library staff to do demos for patrons.

“Our growing eBook collection is an important piece of the service we will provide our customers moving forward,” said Zeth Lietzau, manager of Denver Public Library’s Community Technology Center, one of the first libraries to participate in the program. “We are constantly looking for ways to increase awareness, understanding, and usage of this collection. The education materials and assistance made available from the Reader Library Program will be a big part of that effort.”

See if your library made the list which you can find on the  Sony News and Information site. If you don’t see it there, send your library this link www.sony.com/libraryprogram and tell them to apply! They’ll get access to free eBook training videos and printable collateral for educating their patrons while they wait for their chance to be part of the program. To find a library near you that already offers eBooks, go to sonysearch.overdrive.com.

NYC Reading with Sarah

Sony Reader fans surprised with a special unveiling

By: | Posted: 9/02/2010

A group of about 30 blogging moms attending a recent Reader meetup at the Sony Style Store in New York were among the first to get a peek at the beautifully designed new line of Sony Readers, announced to the world just yesterday.

The new Reader Pocket Edition™, Reader Touch Edition™ and wireless Reader Daily Edition™ (available in the U.S.) were unveiled with a sleek aluminum design, reduced size and weight and new features that had the crowd take notice. There were literally “oohs” and “ahhs” over the new design, one mom even shouted out “awesomely sexy!”

The group, gathered to see Sarah Wendel a Romance book blogger were surprised with a first glance at the new line of Readers.

All of the new models will now sport an optical touch screen so turning pages can be done with a light swipe of the finger or touch of a stylus pen. Reader users have made sure to let us know how much they enjoyed the full touch screen on the Reader Touch Edition and Daily Edition models and now all three models will have an even more responsive touch screen, which by the way, is also great for taking notes and doodling.

Along with the new devices, Sony also announced Reader™ Desktop Edition (formerly Reader Library) for Apple’s Mac OS X and Microsoft® Windows® and Reader™ Mobile Edition for Apple iPhone and Google Android-based smartphones so you can sync your reading among multiple devices. These free applications will be available later this year.

All three Readers will have improved E Ink which delivers a paper-like screen display that is readable in direct sunlight, and offers a high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale to ensure that text and images are crisp and easy to read. You’ll also notice features like adjustable contrast and brightness control.

Check out the Reader Store for improvements and browse the more than 1.2 million titles that are available in the U.S. You can also keep up to date with news from the Reader Store by joining Facebook.com/SonyReaderStore.

The new Reader Pocket Edition and the new Reader Touch Edition are available immediately at SonyStyle.com and Sony Style stores but the new Reader Daily Edition will have to go on your wish list as it’s expected to be available in time for the holidays. For now, stop by a Sony Style Store, test out the new readers and let us know what you think. And, when you see an event from Sony Electronics, sign up!
