Bay Area Sony Store Gets a Facelift & It’s a Local Party

By: | Posted: 5/07/2012

In the heart of silicon valley, our most recent redesigned concept store is ready for prime time. Beginning this week, the Sony Store at the Standford Shopping Center officially invites customers into an entirely new experience. For those local, they may have seen the beginnings of a new color palette and floor design. Similar to its predecessors like the Century City Store, these new stores have a design aimed at capturing the imagination of visitors.

For starters, window displays are replaced by interactive stations inside the store for techies to geek out on the latest PlayStation® games and Sony gear. For example, if you’re feeling snappy you can head on over to the camera station to test drive various Sony® cameras with plenty of miniature subjects ready for the spotlight. Audiophiles will have a chance to try on a huge variety of headphones, even able to plug them into their own personal devices like phones or an iPod®.

The stores also feature exceptional support from our passionate store team aimed at providing you with expert tips and everything from set-up and customization to installation and education.

To usher in the new concept design in true style, there’s a slew of local events happening this week. And don’t worry. If you’re not nearby to celebrate, we have a couple of opportunities for you to virtually join in on the fun.

  • Tuesday, May 8th: Our Google TV™ team pals are hosting a meet up at the store. Come kick it with Google TV for a night of networking, cool giveaways, and plenty of free grub & drinks/sprits (spirits reserved for those 21 and over). We will be talking about Google TV and all the latest features and updates along with a Hangout On Air featuring special guests from Revision3 including Rob DeMillo (CTO Revision3), Brian Brushwood (Scam School), Ron Richards (App Judgement & All About Android), Eileen Rivera (Twit TV) and David Prager (Revision3) along with a live panel from the Google TV Team and Sony. Plus you’ll get a special look at Sony’s next gen Google TV powered prototypes. Non locals can also virtually take part. Learn how here!
  • Wednesday, May 9th: Stop by the store for some free coffee from 7:30- 9:30 am at the University Café
  • Saturday, May 12th: Don’t miss out on the Grand Opening Event. We open at 10am though from 2-4pm, be sure to stop by for music and give-aways.

This is our fifth location featuring the new design.  Other redesigned locations include Roosevelt Field in Garden City, NY, Houston Galleria in Houston, TX, South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., and Century City in Los Angeles.  A directory of all Sony stores across the U.S. can be found here.

Artisan of Imagery Me Ra Koh: Mother’s Day photo tips

By: | Posted: 5/02/2012

I LOVE Mother’s Day because it’s the perfect excuse for asking the kids and your husband to help with a special photo.

Sometimes I’m in the photo and my husband is working with me to capture a story I have in mind, and sometimes it’s a photo I take of the kids. Whichever direction you are leaning, take advantage of the day! Below are a handful of easy, fun tips that will change your photo results overnight so you can capture the joy of this Mother’s Day.

Three C’s to Capturing Kids

CREATE a Vision Through Observation. Digital photography has given us the freedom to shoot endless photos, and yet we end up with exactly that—endless photos. In the weeks and days leading up to Mother’s Day weekend, observe how the light changes throughout the day. If you are going to take the photo inside your home, what room is the brightest and when? If you are going to take the photo outside, what time does the sunset? When is the afternoon sunlight golden? Now that you know what time and what space to set up your photo, observe the kids. What makes them giggle? What are their favorite toys or objects of sentiment? What are their favorite clothes to wear? Have them snuggle up together and even tickle each other!

COME Out from Behind the Camera. Take advantage of SONY’s phenomenal Live View feature on the Alpha and NEX cameras. Kids often respond better to their photo being taken when they can see your face, especially your eyes. Instead of holding the camera up to your face, use the Live View to compose and grab your focus while keeping the camera out in front of you. This way your smile isn’t hidden behind the camera, and the kids feel more connected to you.

CLEAR the Background. Before you take the shot, do a quick sweep of the background. Is there any distracting objects? It only takes two seconds to move a pop can when this photo will last a lifetime. Now you are ready to put your camera in P (Portrait) mode to give you a softer background that will highlight the kids that much more.

Now it’s Time to Let Mom Shine!

Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to get mom in the photo! Moms may act like they don’t want their picture taken, but take it from someone who has shot family portraits for years…every mom LOVES a great photo of her with the kids. Here are three fast tips to help mom shine and look thinner in the photo (She will LOVE you for this! You can send me a thank you card later.).

1. Shoot Down on Mom. To stay clear of double chins and wide necks, get a little height on mom before taking the photo. You could have her sit in a chair while you stand. Or you could stand up on the curbside. It doesn’t need to be a lot of height, just enough to give her reason to naturally lift her chin. This will elongate her neck and get rid of all double chins.

2. Angle Your Body. We never want to stand straight on when having our picture taken. Standing straight on causes our body to look like a big, square box in the photo. Instead, angle your body to the camera with one shoulder coming forward. Voila! Half your body is gone!

3. Scoot Your Bum. If you are sitting for the photo, scoot your bum toward the front of the seat. This causes your body weight to lean in to the camera which slenderizes you that much more!
With a little height from your picture taker, your body angled and your bum scooted forward, you are looking FANTASTIC! Have your hubby take the photo!

What woman doesn’t want a GREAT shot of just her? After you get that shot, add the kids. Have them cuddle up around you while keep your body turned at an angle.

4. BONUS TIP for the HUBBY! If you want to score some SERIOUS points with your wife this Mother’s Day, frame the photo so that only half her arm is in the shot. This makes her arm look that much smaller and slender which is something EVERY woman wants.

If your little one is a baby take advantage by blocking with baby. Position your baby to block any of mom’s vulnerable spots. For example, if your wife is feeling a little camera shy because she hasn’t got rid of all her baby weight have her lay on her side (a very slenderizing pose!) and place baby right in front of her tummy.

I’d love to see your results! Post them on my Facebook page, and I’ll pick a few to critique! May your Mother’s Day be unforgettable and frame-able!

Catching Up with the Sony Camera Club

By: | Posted: 5/01/2012

New Challenge Announced

Spring is finally here and that means it is time for another Sony Camera Club Photo Challenge! This one we’re doing a little differently; it is a combination of inspiration and pop culture passion. The new Photo Challenge is: Favorite Movie/TV Show.

Let me explain- Ever see something in everyday life that reminded you of a scene from your favorite film or show?  It could be a landscape, an object that was important to the storyline or a scene that reminds you of a poignant onscreen moment (no logos or anything; this needs to be your original photo work only).

For example:  I personally have a hard time looking at a statue of an angel (especially a weeping angel) without telling myself “don’t blink” because of a certain episode of my current sci-fi TV show obsession.

This one will run until May 31st, 2012.

A quick reminder on the rules:

1. It needs to be shot on a Sony camera. As usual, both DSLR and Point-and-Shoot are welcome!

2. For each photo you submit into the challenge, please comment on at least one other photo.

3. If you have people in your photo that are identifiable in any way, make sure you have their permission to post the photo.

4. Please submit the photo to the group first. The goal is for us to share creative interpretations, but also learn techniques and styles.

To enter your photo, visit the Sony Camera Club on Flickr®, add your photo to the Group Pool, then to the topic: New Photo Challenge; Favorite Movie/TV Show

March Photo Challenge Favorites

Our last challenge, Silhouettes, was the most popular challenge so far! There were so many beautifully shot photos from all over the world. Silhouettes were highlighted by fog and sunlight, set apart by striking architecture and or showcased by the beauty of nature. Narrowing it down was a difficult task but here are the favorites:

Shot with the NEX-3 using a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 fully opened lens and NEX-MD converter, this photo was taken in Mannheim, Germany.

“I really liked silhouettes of people against the illuminated fountain, but wanted to have a fountain as a main subject. That’s why the focus is somehow reversed – foreground out of focus and background (the fountain) in. The silhouette is one of my friends,” said Camera Club Member jerzykott.

Sunsets and sunrises were another popular subject for this challenge. Camera Club member Luiza Meireles had one of our favorites. This beautiful beach scene was taken at sunset at Atalaia beach in Brazil with a Sony A330, SAL75-300mm lens with settings at 85mm, f/4.5, 1/160s, and ISO 100.

Once again, kennyf9 has one of our favorite photos. This striking nighttime image was taken on September  11, 2011 on the tenth anniversary the World Trade Center attacks. Kenny took the photo from Liberty State Park in New Jersey, “the view lends itself to some beautiful images of downtown Manhattan, NY” said Kenny.

Even though he had been taking many photos of the Tribute Lights, “this one was actually taken on the way back to my car. It was one of those ‘wow’ moments for me, with the people in the image enjoying a quiet spot and the trees and ground framing them nicely with the beams of light in the background.

To capture the shot at night, Kenny used his Sony A700 with ISO 125, f/11 for four seconds.

“Lost” by Spencer Bowman

One of our spookier shots was “Lost” by Camera Club Member Spencer Bowman. This eerie shot was taken on the shore of Loch Lubnaig, in Argyll, Scotland.

Spencer frequently visits the Loch Lubnaig on the way to the Highlands.  “On this particular morning there was a heavy mist, giving the perfect opportunity to isolate subjects, said Spencer. I have a real fascination with water; we have nearly 1000 lochs in Scotland so it’s hard not to!”

What might be even more amazing than this photo is how it was taken. This photo was shot with the Sony A450 using a water damaged ‘unrepairable’ Sigma 10-20 lens. Spencer actually used a broken matchstick to jam aperture open. The settings were ISO 200, approx. ‘f16′, 1/50, @ approx. 12mm.
