Dash Personal Internet Viewer:Your Questions Answered

By: | Posted: 5/06/2010

  • Dash was “ushered” in by getting spotted in a popular music video
  • Dash woke viewers up on NBC’s Today Show
  • A certain domestic goddess Tweeted about the Dash

And now the Dash Personal Internet Viewer™ is officially for sale on SonyStyle.com and Sony Style stores. On the “My Dash” site, you can sort through tons of free apps available to Dash owners. I spotted Gmail apps, Facebook and Twitter apps (of course) but other interesting ones like a eBay apps. My personal favorite was a “Package Tracker” by ApoXX that lets you track your packages by DHL, FedEx, FedEx SmartPost, UPS, or USPS.

If you don’t find what you need, then make it. The Dash Developer site is available where you can submit an app or access the SDK to start programming.

I’ve also gotten a lot of  questions on SonyStyle.com about the Dash. Here’s a couple. If you’ve got questions or have spotted the Dash in more videos, tweets and what have you, please share. In the meantime as I get more questions, I’ll post them here.

Will the product have an automatic night-time dimming screen feature. This feature will help at night in the bedroom? - Stew
Yes, there is a dimming feature (for night-time). It’s easy to set but not automatic so you’ll want to set it before you nod off to sleep.

Does this device have qwert keyboard? - ssaha
The Dash is driven largely by apps and there are lots of apps that have virtual keyboards pop up. For example, on the Facebook app, if you’re updating your status, you use a virtual keyboard on the screen. Another example is a virtual keyboard also pops up when you’re accessing functions like accessing your wi-fi network, etc.

Can I mount this in my car? - Russ
There isn’t a car mount accessory at this time.

How do I get started making an app for the Dash? It says 1000 apps already but I’m not finding the dev kit anywhere? - olextraplus
We’ve now got a developer community site where you can access all the documentation and support for creating apps.

Does the Sony Dash supports Adobe Flash ?
It supports the playback of Flash video so for example YouTube based videos (via the apps).

Is Dash a netbook or tablet?
No, it’s apples and oranges. It’s not meant to store data, cruise the net or perform like a traditional computer. The Dash is a Personal Internet Viewer designed for your home so the intention of this gadget is to streamline your internet experience. Dash will automatically deliver content to you based on what you’re interested in. I see it making multi-tasking at home easier – accessing apps, viewing photos, watching video and listening to music…all with one foot in the offline world. My Dash was mailed to me last week and it’s in the kitchen. I just entertained this weekend and had music playing for my guests, showed them vacation photos and accessed some recipies, all while cooking. It was more fun for me cooking and more fun for my guests hanging in the kitchen with me.

I live outside the US. If I get a Dash and take it back with me, will it still work?

The Dash  is currently sold and can only be used in the US. The Dash doesn’t support service outside of the US until further notice. If you try to use Dash outside of the US, then you’ll get an “error” blocking service

My fellow editor, Sukhjit created an unboxing video if you’d like a more in depth tour of the Dash. Again, if you have questions, don’t be shy. Feel free to post your question in a comment  - happy to help.

Sony’s Dash Makes Music Video Cameo

By: | Posted: 4/23/2010

While I selfishly wish it were me in a music video cameo, Sony’s Dash™ Personal Internet Viewer makes a sneak appearance into one extremely popular music artist’s recent video. While I can’t divulge who I can at least link you to the right place. It’s certainly a fun way to usher in the Dash… :-)

Take a look and let me know if you spot it! The Dash™ Personal Internet Viewer is currently available for preorder on Sony Style.

Sony Style begins pre-orders on new Sony dash

By: | Posted: 3/03/2010

USA today featured it in their article “What was fun and fresh at CES”.

IGN (Gear News) called adding Netflix access to this gadget “one more awesome asset to the pile” - Netflix Comes to the Sony Dash

Yahoo Tech News Blog said, “In a world of overcomplicated gadgets, it’s actually refreshing to see something as simple and straightforward as the Dash hit the market.” - Sony Dash is your affordable data feed machine

But what do you think?

This week, Sony Style announced pre-orders for one of the most talked about gadgets, certainly at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. The dash Personal Internet Viewer.

This product packs quite a punch. Behind its 7” LCD touch screen likes a slue of capabilities; mostly through the availability of more than 1,500 apps. Leveraging select Bravia Internet Video offerings with the Chumby platform, dash has apps for Facebook, Netflix, YouTube and Pandora to name a few. I found apps that make dash useful wherever you put it. You can put an alarm clock with access to news in your bedroom. Watch TV shows or look up recipes in the kitchen (app by danskyad). Or stream internet radio in the living room during parties. If you live in a dorm room, I’d consider checking out the lava lamp. You can wirelessly fresh your apps through your home network which to me is nice as it doesn’t require a sync to your PC to update..

Last week Engadget posted, “The Dash is thoughtfully designed enough to earn praise, useful enough to pique interest, and affordable enough to merit consideration.” - Switched On: Sony’s forward Dash

In the end, it’s your call.

If you’re already a dash fan or interested in getting your hands on one of these puppies to try out yourself, I’d order soon. Pre-orders are the first to get filled when shipments arrive next month and it helps ensure that one of these boxes get stamped with your name on it.
