Dash App Contest

Awesome Apps wanted! Introducing the Dash App Contest.

By: | Posted: 2/01/2011

Do you have an awesome idea for an app you think should be on the Sony Dash personal internet viewer? Come on, we know you have great ideas… and if you’re a Flash developer, here’s your chance to put it in action. Today we kick off the “Create a Dash App Contest” and we’re calling out to developers ready to turn your app building know how into an awesome application and maybe even some cool cash… the grand prize is $5000!
Here’s how the contest works. Visit the page to get the application and find out the rules. Every month starting today (2/1/2011) until the end of the contest (6/13/2011), we’ll award the most awesome app (see the official rules to know what constitutes awesome) $1000. At the end, all apps accepted in the entire contest will be eligible to win the grand prize for the best one, $5000!
Don’t have a Dash to develop on? Well, the first 200 developers to qualify will get a Sony Dash loaner to use for testing and developing their ideas. If 3 of your apps are accepted, you’ll get to keep the unit for yourself.

For those of you not familiar, the Dash runs Flash apps on the Linux based Chumby operating system. Popular apps give you “glanceable” information, like little bites of info you want to see without having to power up or navigate through a separate device. Current Dash owners can choose from 1000+ which include Netflix, Pandora, Slacker, YouTube and have access to Sony’s own Bravia Internet Video content.
If you’re looking for inspiration, I’d suggest a stop at Facebook.com/SonyDash where you’ll find an active and outspoken community of users and fans who will tell you what they love and what they want on the Sony Dash. And one last thing, good luck!

Sony® Dash™ trending on holiday gift lists

By: | Posted: 12/11/2010

Maybe it’s the recent addition of Hulu Plus or the special sale price that just went into effect, but this week one Sony device in particular has popped up in a number of suggested gift lists, the Sony Dash personal internet viewer. One article from Fox.com even mentions Sony Dash in its Best Gadget Gifts for Moms list! I actually had a chance to talk to some moms recently about what they thought of Sony Dash. Watch this video and find out exactly what made these moms say “oooh” and “awww” then imagine how this suggestion will help you cross off names on your holiday gift list. (BTW- Dash is at a special price for the holidays – $149 down from $199)

Sony Dash is, as you know, a completely customizable product.   We think that’s one of the best things about it – you can add apps and create channels for the things you like or want to see.  With Dash, you get real-time information you’re interested in and that can be something as simple as a real time stream of your friend’s Facebook photos, Twitter updates, CNBC news and stock information or your favorite TV shows via Hulu Plus.

As you can see in the video, each mom had their favorite thing about Sony Dash, from Flickr to LOL Cats to simple recipe and weather apps. I don’t know about you, but I think the reactions to the content popping up was priceless!

Now, take a look at this week’s top 10 most popular apps. What combo of apps on a Sony Dash would make this a fun gift for the people you love?

Sony brings you more connections to content via Hulu Plus

By: | Posted: 11/12/2010

If you’re one of the growing number of television watchers catching their favorite shows, new and old, online get ready for some good news about your viewing options. Hulu Plus, one of the deepest online libraries of current and classic TV shows, will be available to Sony Dash owners starting today with the latest over the air software update. Hulu Plus is a subscription service that allows connected devices to access everything from the latest episodes of Glee, Modern Family and The Office to tons of golden oldies.

The Sony Dash personal internet viewer is the latest Sony device to include on option to subscribe to Hulu streaming content.  US Owners of 2010 BRAVIA HDTVs saw it show up in the menus of their televisions last week as did Playstation 3 fans taking the experience usually reserved for laptop and PC consumption into a more relaxing viewing mode, the living room.

Hulu Plus is a paid service and costs $9.99 per month.  If you’d like to get more info on today’s Dash update you can find it on the Facebook.com/sonydash or the Sony news and information site.  For those of you looking to buy one of these connected devices, follow this link for a promotion that provides $20 towards a trial of Hulu Plus on selected BRAVIA Internet-enabled products.

If you’ve taken the plunge and are streaming via Hulu Plus on your BRAVIA or Dash, we want to hear from you. Drop us a comment and let us know what you’re watching.

Dash of Inspiration Photo Contest Winner

See the winning Sony Dash of inspiration photo and hear from the winner

By: | Posted: 10/20/2010

Congratulations to Benjamin Jafvert, winner of the Sony Dash of Inspiration photo contest!  Ben uploaded this photo of a blender mixing up a bunch of things he might need in the kitchen like recipes, clock, Netflix, timer and more.  As a father of four he spends most of his time in the kitchen, but his computer is upstairs, “I have to run up to look up recipes or do measurement conversions, Dash (in the kitchen) would be perfect, everything will be right here” he said and added that he’d use Sony’s personal internet viewer for music, games and movies in the kitchen since there is no computer and a wall between him and the television in the living room.

With his winning picture Ben will get a suite of Sony 3D products including a Sony 3D HDTV which he said will replace his 7-year-old, 27in Sony television. And, although it wasn’t part of the prize package, we’re sending Ben a Dash too!

“I’m ecstatic, I’m excited, this kind of stuff doesn’t happen to me!” he said when he got the call that his picture was chosen.

Thank you to all the Sony Dash fans who sent us photos and voted for their favorites. We saw some pretty interesting and creative entries. We want to send a big thank you to our judges too, Cathy Brooks, Chris MacManus and Peter Rojas for helping us choose the top ten finalists.

The contest is over, I know, but it was great fun to see your pictures so keep sending us photos of your Sony Dash in action and make sure to be part of our Sony Dash community on Facebook!

Dash Final Screen

Vote for your “Dash of Inspiration” photo favorite

By: | Posted: 10/03/2010

Earlier this month we asked members of the Sony Dash Facebook page to submit photos of where their Dash resided and why. For folks who didn’t have a Dash, we simply asked them to show us where a Dash would fit into their life and why. We had over 100 entries, some spot on and some… well, they were a little wacky (Dash on a beach comes to mind).

Our judges, Cathy Brooks, Chris MacManus and Peter Rojas have chosen the top 10 and now we’re asking you to pick the grand prize winner! Go to the Sony Dash page and vote for the photo you think does the best job at explaining where the Sony Dash can bring you your favorite parts of the Internet and why. Here’s a quick preview of the final 10.

Now, here is how you vote: click over to the Sony Dash Facebook page and tell us who you think deserves a suite of Sony 3D products. That’s right, the grand prize includes a Sony BRAVIA 40-inch HX800 Series HDTV. Great prize for simply uploading a photo, don’t you think? We’re accepting your votes from now until noon (EDT), October 11th. So choose wisely, make sure to read the captions and remember to stay tuned here to the Sony Electronics blog, we have some great opportunities for you ahead.
