The Technology Wedding of the Year

By: | Posted: 1/19/2012

2011 may have brought us the Royal Wedding and the Kardashian/Humphries fiasco, but for 2012, the wedding of the year took place just last week. On Jan 11th, in the glorious town of Vegas, friends and family joined together to partake in the joyous union of the Bravia TV and the internet.

Yes, we are talking a real-life wedding. The ceremony took place at the Bellagio wedding chapel and commemorated the joyous union of our Bravia TV line and the Sony Entertainment Network.

As many of you know, this  marriage was a long time coming. All of us, who have been close to the lovebirds have seen their relationship grow and blossom over the years. It was only appropriate that they make their union official at the biggest tech event of the year – CES.

Since we know many of you appreciate a good love story and a few solid puns, we decided to take this time to share a little bit about how these crazy kids got together. Below is their love story and a few photos from their big day.

The Love Story of the TV and the Internet

*Co-written by Rob Manfredo, a dear friend to both the bride and groom

TV was always a hopeless romantic. Being the sassy thing she is, she’s always had a knack for attracting people of all types. And yet, despite her magnetism, she struggles to find her perfect complement.

In her youth, she was drawn to the free and breezy types. But eventually she became annoyed that they spent so much time floating in the air and she grew troubled by their inability to consistently give her the “right signals.” So she moved on.

She then developed a penchant for the types that were all about making a connection. While some of these relationships lasted a while, eventually she found that this type of mate lacked the flexibility to meet her changing whims. Every time these suitors would cozy up and attach themselves, she couldn’t help but feel they were restricting her and limiting her potential.

As time went on, TV really matured and came into her own. Physically, she began working out regularly and she slimmed down considerably. She also began a rigorous facial routine that gave her a glow that truly lights up a room.

Her new look also reflected the changes she had made inside. She got smarter, faster and brighter. Yet, like so many other girls, she was still waiting for the ideal mate – someone that could be her partner and challenge her to grow.

And wait she did – until the day that Internet appeared at her steps.

While a few years her junior, Internet was already quite mature when he and TV first met. He had grown up in a time when choice, flexibility and instant gratification were paramount for most folks and he had learned to adapt quickly to changes in the world. It was clear from the start that he was on the fast track to stardom.

The ultimate connector, communicator and showman, there was really only one thing that Internet was missing in his early days to make him a true winner. He yearned for that special someone that could help him get people’s attention.

When he first began his quest of love, he spent most his time with the nerdy types that brought him into this world. While he felt at home with these peeps, he knew there was more to life than academia.

Then he went in the opposite direction, chasing the risqué and depraved. While he found that world interesting, he felt it was limiting his rise to prominence since people kept his potential in this world private. But, it was through this experience that he recognized his skills as an entertainer.

As time progressed, Internet got smarter, and quicker and he became a more thoughtful and helpful being. He began attracting a different type of mate, eventually attaining an amount of attention only rivaled by TV. It wasn’t long before others started to realize his ability to deliver on-demand content and he was set-up with a whole variety of mates. But Internet would not be bound by any device or location (such a player!). He had everything, except that perfect complement – the one special mate that would make his heart full and give him a purpose in life.

Then, one fateful day, Internet found himself paired with TV. He knew, the moment they met that they were made for one another. In this union there is limitless potential, indispensable personality and unprecedented performance. Everyone knows, this is one marriage that will last.

And there you have it… that’s the whole story of their romance. Should you feel inspired by the enormity of their love you are welcome to share your well wishes for the happy couple in the comments. We’ll make sure to pass them along.

Everything you need to know about Sony at CES

By: | Posted: 1/06/2012

For gadget geeks and tech fans the biggest event of the year starts in three days. The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – the largest electronics trade show in the World – will begin in Las Vegas. Sony always has a large CES presence (literally, we’re taking up over 30,000 square feet) and every year we host tens of thousands of people who come to get hands on time with the newest innovations.

Since we know many of you don’t have a ticket for this, the mother-of-all gadget events, we want to make sure you have a front row seat to experience the news as it happens. And for those of you who will be there with us, we have some important info for you too.

So, without further delay, here are all the ways you can get your news, straight from us, during CES.

Sony at CES

The Sony CES Press Conference - On Monday, January 9th, come back to this post or go to Sony.com/CES to watch a live stream of the show starting at 5 PM PST.  We also want you to be part of the conversation, so like last year, we’re taking your questions for a live Q & A just after the press announcements. SGNL by Sony Host, Anthony Carboni, and I will be talking with Sony Electronics President and COO, Phil Molyneux, who will answer many of your most pressing inquiries about our news. If you’d like to participate, you can ask your questions in the U-stream chat room or via Facebook®  and on Twitter™  using the #SonyCES hashtag.

  • Videos from Sony’s CES Booth – This year we also want to give you a chance to be in control of what you see from us from the show. Each day we’ll post a poll asking you what we should film that day and based on the most popular topic, we’ll create a video for you. You can find a new poll every day at 5 PM (Vegas time) at Sony.com/CES. Cast your vote by 9 AM of the following day and we’ll customize a video for you.

  • Sony product demos at CES - The SGNL by Sony Team has 8 shows lined up for you, each with interviews, product demos and special insight about the Sony products at the conference. We can’t tell you what they’ll be covering yet, but check back on the blog after the press conference for a post that will include all of the product videos.

  • Booth happenings for CES attendees – For the lucky few who are attending, we’ll have quite a bit going on at the Sony CES booth itself. Throughout the show we’ll have some special Foursquare opportunities. For the press conference on Monday, the first 10 people who check in after 3 PM, will become one of the very first owners of one of the products we’ll be announcing there. So, if you are planning on attending the press conference, get there early and makes sure you check in.  Tues – Fri, we will also be running a check-in special and we’ll give a $25 E-gift card to the Sony Store for the first person every hour who checks in.

We’ll also have all sorts of music events throughout the conference, including Karmin and Kellie Pickler. To get the dates and times of all the performances we will publish a full line up of the Sony CES events here on the blog.

Our overall goal with the entire conference is to give you the best Sony CES experience possible (whether that be virtually or on the floor). But we can only do it with your help. So please tell us via Twitter, Facebook and the blog about what you want and we’ll do our best to deliver.

Finally, for those of you in Vegas for CES, let us know. We’d like the opportunity to meet you and give you a VIP tour of the booth. And PS we have a special Sony sticker made just for CES, so if you come find any of the social media team at the booth, we’ll have a sticker for you as long as supplies last. See you in Vegas!

The 100 words our fans used to describe Sony

By: | Posted: 12/30/2011

Last week we asked our fans a question, “How has Sony impacted your life?” We received over 400 answers to the question and the answers painted a picture of you, our fans. You use Sony to enjoy your life and be entertained in 2011. From gaming to streaming movies to taking better photos than you ever thought possible. Your words describe how you feel about our products and we are always inspired by seeing Sony through your eyes.

“It cures my really bad boredom” said Eric R.

Tyler K got an NEX-5 camera for a recent trip and said after using it, “Now I love taking pictures [and it’s] kick started my photography into an actual hobby.”

Mark R said, “Sony Tablet, amazing piece of kit”.

Asha R “My phone, my camera, my laptop….I LOVE SONY!!!!”

To end the year we wanted to share this piece of “art” made using a site called Wordle.net of over 100 of the most commonly used words left in comments to that question, “How has Sony impacted your life”.  Thank you for engaging with us, as Sean R mentioned, “can’t wait to see what you do in 2012,” we also can’t wait for 2012 but in our case, it’s to hear the new ways Sony has fit into your life.

Sony Launches New Store Designs + Some Little Known Store Facts

By: | Posted: 12/16/2011

The holidays are just around the corner. Most people slow down a bit during this time but not us! We have had not one, not two, but three recently remodeled stores open over the last few weeks.

We kicked it off with it our Houston Galleria store in Houston, Texas which opened on November 22nd, just in time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Hot on the heels of Houston, our Roosevelt Field store, located in Garden City, New York, reopened on the very next day. It was a welcome return for Sony Store fans who had been visiting our temporary kiosk while this store was redone. Last but not least is our South Coast Plaza store in Costa Mesa, California which just reopened on December 3rd. All three stores now have the new design concept that debuted at Century City store in Los Angeles, California in April of this year.

To celebrate, all three stores held VIP Parties with local lifestyle magazines; Houston partnered with Modern Luxury Magazine, Roosevelt Field with Manhattan Magazine and South Coast Plaza’s was cohosted by Riviera Magazine this past Wednesday. There were also weekend-long grand opening celebrations with music, food, and of course, tons of Sony gadget giveaways. Thank you to everyone that came out to our events and checked out the new store design.

But all celebrating aside, a lot of work went into the remodel of each store. Here are five little known facts about our redone stores:

  • The new design concept for the Sony stores was created with the help of Tokyo-based architecture firm Klein Dytham. Sony had been looking at a number of approaches that would work as a general pilot design concept for stores around the world— not just in the United States. Sony has launched the new design concept not just in the U.S., but in stores in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand.
  • On average, a typical store construction in the US takes 16 weeks and more than 20,000 man hours to complete. However, the Century City store was built in just 10 weeks.

  • There are several miles worth of cabling throughout the stores connecting all of the entertainment devices and store operational functions, all hidden under the floors, unseen by store visitors.
  • Color is a huge factor in the new design. The stores are designed with movable walls and modular color schemes.  We use more than 650 multi-colored cloth panels throughout the store, which can be easily moved to create a new floor set, depending on the season.
  • When we tore the ceiling down in the South Coast Plaza store, we discovered a skylight that had been covered! It brought such wonderful natural light into the store that we incorporated it into the design.

Have you had a chance to check out one of the reopened stores? What did you think? We’d love to hear your feedback in the comments. Or if you have photos from any of our store events, please share them with us on our @SonyStore Twitter account.

Shopping for a Cause: The Boys and Girls Clubs of America

By: | Posted: 12/07/2011

Sony Store has gotten into the spirit of giving this year with another “shop for a cause” day.

On December 8th, 5% of the total amount made in Sony Stores will be donated to the BGCA.

Since 1861, Clubs have been helping kids reach their full potential. With nearly 4,000 Clubs serving more than 4.1 million young people, The Boys and Girls Club of America provides safe places for kids to go after school, mentorship and other programs.

Since this is the season of giving back, we’d like to know what (if any) charitable activities you’re doing over the holidays. Let us know!
