Things might be winding down for the holidays but the Sony Camera Club on Flickr is still shooting away. This week, we launched our mini photo challenge for December; winter light. We left the theme open to artist interpretation in order to inspire our photographers to be creative and so no one felt limited by the topic. Winter light can be the Aurora Borealis, way the fire looks on a cold night or your neighbor’s over-the-top holiday light display.
The Sony Camera Club also just wrapped their Fall Photo Challenge. Members from all over shared their photos of what epitomizes fall for them. These were some of the most striking, vibrant shots I’ve ever seen! It also became clear that even with a topic as broad as fall, most people think of beautiful colors. Below are the winners, as voted by the moderators. I had the chance to speak with them about their entries:
“Fall on Me” by crimsonbelt
When asked why he chose this photo for the challenge, crimsonbelt said that he thought “it would be nice to mix fall with action, motion and emotion, since my region (Balikpapan, Indonesia) has only dry fall leaves”.
“Old Harriman Shack” by kennyf9
“The photo was taken in Harriman State Park in NY” says member kennyf9. “I was out shooting the beginning of fall colors moving into my area, but it was a misty, rainy day. As I was driving down a road I had never been on before, I found this little shack just off the road”. Kennyf9 said that he was drawn to this location because of “the soft light, the misty air, and just the hint of the start of the leaves changing”.

This photo was taken right outside jscotcha’s home in Roseville, CA (I’d love to have a tree like that in my yard!).
“Morningstar Mill” by sonofapreacherman
“The picture was taken at Morningstar Mill Park, in St. Catherine’s, Ontario” says member sonofapreacherman. “The Mill was built in 1872 and it overlooks a very pretty falls known as DeCew. The building in my photograph was actually a community hall that was built around the same time as the mill. It remained a community hall until sometime after 1883 when a serious fight broke out, the mill owners then closed the hall and converted it into a sawmill.
“I chose this photo because I liked the splash of fall colour in the scene as well as the reflection of the sawmill in the water. I also find the mill charming and the area is very peaceful”
“Purple Moorhen” by santanu nandy
Sony Camera Club member santanu nandy has a passion for wildlife photography. “This photo was taken at a place called Rann of Kutch, Gujarat state in India- a seasonal salt pan in the Thar Desert which attracts birds in the fall and winter”
When asked why he chose this photo to represent fall, he said that “in India we do not get the colors of fall in the tree leaves… so I used the setting sun colors to portray the fall colors in the desert.”
How did he get such a close and clear photo? “This photo was taken with me sitting in a hide and at eye level with the bird (that’s why it looks like a wide angle shot). I waited for it to be isolated from other birds and I clicked the shot”.
It was an unexpected treat that our winners were all from different parts of the world (and almost every one used a different Sony Alpha DSLR). We really got a great picture of what fall is like in different countries. Which photo was your favorite?
