James Patterson’s Exclusive Note: Beware of the summer slide, keep your kids reading

by Amy Currier 07/19/2012

With the new school year right around the corner, keeping your kids reading during the summer months couldn’t be more important. Reader Store wants to make sure those minds stay active and imaginations keep truckin’—and what better place to stock up on the best picks for kids than on your Reader?

Bestselling author James Patterson is an enthusiast of all things reading—but most importantly: he’s a dad. Check out Reader Store’s exclusive guest blog post from James on why it’s important to keep your kids reading during the off-season.

It’s summertime. And I’ve got good news and kind-of-sort-of bad news.

The kind-of-sort-of bad news is, Moms and Dads, it’s your job to step up and tell your kids that reading is a part of life at your house. That’s the deal. Yep, even in the sum-sum-summertime.

The very good news: there are many ways to get the kids in your life genuinely excited about reading, including:

  • Find your kids some really cool books. Trust me, they’re out there!
  • Search the Sony eBooks site, visit your local bookstore or library, or visit ReadKiddoRead.com. That’s my website and it’s full of recommendations for great summer reading for kids.

During the summer, kids are in danger of falling two years behind in school. Without reading, kids lose an average of one to three months of achievement over the summer—aka the “summer slide.” By the end of 6th grade, children who do not read over the summer are as much as two years behind other kids who do.

Take my word, as an author, sure, but as a parent first—take your kids’ reading future into your own hands. The more kids read, the better readers they become, and the more doors will be opened for them as they move through school.

They’ll thank you for it—as soon as they finish that really cool book you find for them.

Great post! During summer, aside from taking my kids to camping or out of own trips, I always make sure that my kids is able to read at least 2 books. I want them to have fun and gain knowledge as well.
