αNEX Cameras:New Firmware Enables Translucent Mirror Adapter Compatibility

by Gina 12/15/2011

Today we released updated firmware for our αNEX E-mount cameras, more specifically firmware update 2.0v for Lens/Adapter. The firmware update applies to E-mount models launched prior to Oct 2011, so models getting the firmware update include the αNEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-C3 cameras, as well NEX-VG10 Handycam Camcorder and even a model in our professional camera line, the Sony NEX-FS100U.

In these cases, the new firmware provides compatibility with the recently launched LA-EA2 translucent mirror Lens Mount Adapter. Prior to this firmware update, the LA-EA2 only worked with the αNEX-5N , NEX-7 and NEX-VG20.  We know owners of the previous models were eagerly asking for compatibility to enjoy phase detect  autofocus when using one of Sony’s A-mount lenses.

The LA-EA2 is unique in that it replaces the Contrast AF of the E-mount camera with the Phase Detect AF of Sony’s Translucent Mirror DSLRs.  The original LA-EA1 mount adaptor allows only contrast detect AF, with SSM and SAM series A-mount lenses, and no autofocus with others. Even with the AF capable lenses, autofocus wasn’t nearly as fast as with A-mount DSLRs because DSLR lenses aren’t really optimized for the Contrast AF found in all mirror-less cameras.  With the LA-EA2, a microcomputer driven Phase Detect AF system is built directly into the adapter, which allows the camera to focus just as fast as a DSLR – and with all A-mount AF lenses! This firmware update lets the earlier cameras recognize the LA-EA2 adaptor when it’s attached, and prioritizes the adaptor’s AF system over the camera’s. The result?  Super-fast Phase Detect AF functionality for all A-mount autofocus lenses when using LA-EA2 with earlier E-mount cameras.

So for owners, I’m guessing you’ve got your camera in hand ready to snag this firmware. Below are some quick links to get you there. Enjoy!

You’ll need to have a computer to download the firmware and perform the update. Be sure to select the version that matches your OS.

@ NEX-5N owner – Your model does not require a firmware update for the LA-EA2 adapter as it already supports it.

Now if Sony would only comment on the FS100 firmware that was mentioned in this blog post but hasn’t materialized.

Hey Guest, Good news to share. So this firmware update is for the NEX5 vs. the NEX5N. This is because the translucent mirror adapter was already made to work with the NEX5N so this adapter should work fine with your camera without any additional firmware. Hope this info is helpful!

what about the Nex-5N, can i use this update on a 5N?

Hi Guest. Support for the LA-EA2 adapter is already included int the NEX-5N though earlier models did not have compatibility. One of those earlier models is the NEX-5. So the adapter will work just fine on your camera without this additional firmware. Hope this info is helpful!

    Hi Gina,
You list support for the LA-EA2 on the FS100 but there doesn’t appear to be a download link for the firmware for this model.

Also, does this mean that if I use the firmware from one camera I can use the adapter on a 2nd camera if it is a different model?

Hi Gina – Any update on FS100 support and if the LA-EA2 can only be used on either the new NEX models or one of the old ones (but not back and forth between models?
        Thx – Shawn

          Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your patience. The new firmware for the FS100 will be available early 2012. For full details you’ll want to keep an eye out on Sony’s FS100 page or the NXCAM microsite. Hope this info is helpful! Happy New Yr.

Hi Gina, I own a LAEA1 mount, and there is a huge lag on the SAM and SSM lenses, is there any lag at all when shooting continous with the LAEA2 mount? I am looking to do fast sports shots, so I need some advice on this before I get the wrong adapter again. And the phase detection works just as fast with all the A mount lenses?

Could we have an upgrade that enables better (more shots, more AV range) RAW AE bracketing for the Nex series? It would be really nice to have — it’s the only defect I can think of that wonderful cameras!

When will the nex-7 get a firmware update to improve its auto bracketing for HDR images?

Is there ny chance that this update or a future update will include support for the digital view finder (FDA-EV1S)

I am a bit confused as to whether I need this update or not. At the beginning of the setup this statement is made – - “This update only applies for NEX-5 cameras that currently have a firmware version 01, 02, 03, or 04. If your camera firmware version is already Version 04, this update is not necessary.” The part about if version is already version 4 then update is not necessary, is the confusing part. In step 5. the picture example of what is shown on the camera shows version 4 with lens/mount adapter ver .01. This is exactly my camera shows. The statement just below the picture says –”If the current firmware version is 05 or higher, the camera does not need this update.” So, do I need this update or not. My camera does not say version 5. However why publish version 5 if version 4 doesn’t need it. Like I said, I’m confused. Sorry for being so dumb. Thanks for the help.

When are we going to see an an update that provides manual control when shooting movies on the nex-5? Limiting the camera’s firmware only serves to to annoy your customers! Please Sony read the forums and give your customers (the people that keep you in business) what we want. Make your good camera’s fantastic.
