Backstage Quick Tip #7: Troubleshooting PC Audio Issues

By: | Posted: 8/23/2010

Editor’s Note: Backstage Technicians are here to help and in this ongoing series, they’ll offer me their favorite tips and provide answers to some of the most common service related questions they hear at both the call center and in Sony Style Stores.

Experiencing PC audio playback issues and need help getting sound to play again from your computer?  More often than not, problems with audio playback often stem from a user inadvertently disabling a drive or changing a setting.

In this quick tip, we’ll review the top three most common fixes our Backstage℠ Technicians have found to help solve the case.

  • Check the jack your headphones are plugged into. They may be plugged into the wrong spot (such as the Line Out or Microphone port). Note too that most computers will cut the sound to its internal or external speakers as soon as headphones are plugged in.
  • Be sure your speakers are plugged into a working power source, turned on and that your system volume is up appropriately and not muted.  To check your system volume open Volume Control.

a)    To do this, click the Start button, and select Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound.

b)    Under Audio Devices and Sound, select Adjust System Volume.

c)    Under the Main Volume, move the slider up or down to raise or lower the volume.

  • Be sure your computer has a properly functioning sound card – a small piece of hardware within your PC that translates code into sound.  You can check the status of your sound card within the Device Manager.

a)    To do this, click the Start menu, type Device Manager and hit enter.  Enter your PC’s administrator password if prompted (Vista & Windows 7 only).

b)    Expand the Sound, video and game controllers category – you can do this by double clicking the category.

c)    If there is an audio device listed (for example it may say, Intel High Definition Audio Device), then your PC has a sound card. If no sound card appears in the list, you will need to install one – for most users, especially laptop owners, leave this installation to the experts.

d)    If a yellow question mark appears next to the name, it indicates there might be a problem with the sound card. Right-click the name of the sound card and select Properties.

e)    Click the General tab, and look in the Device Status box to view any problems.

f)    In most cases, you may need to update the sound card’s driver.  To do this click the Driver tab, then select Update Driver.

g)    It’s possible you may have also updated the sound card with a driver that’s incompatible with the OS or PC’s BIOS.  To revert to the previously working driver, simply click the Driver tab again then select Roll Back Driver. If this option is greyed out it means you have the original driver installed and that no previous version is available.

Again, our Backstage Technicians have found these three simple tips to solve most issues with PC audio playback.  However, if you’re still experiencing problems with playback, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local Backstage Technician for more advanced troubleshooting or jump over to our Forums to get additional tips and technical advice from other users.

PIIQ

New Videos & Events PIIQ Fan Interest

By: | Posted: 8/18/2010

Did anyone get that? If you haven’t yet checked out Sony’s freshly dipped PIIQ headphone line, it’s worth giving a look. These headphones have been featured quite a bit in the blog world and have recently laid upon the heads of the talented P Rangers $ Jerk and skater, Chaz Ortiz at the Boston Dew Tour event. PIIQ has been posting videos (for internet eyes only) and have been working with indie bands and fashion sites for “Music Mondays” and “PIIQ pairs”.

When it comes to videos, PIIQ has broken the mold producing some fabulously off the wall commercials. Random? Yes. Strangely entertaining. I’d have to say yes.

Which one is your favorite? Mine I think is the toaster one.

You’ll also want to check out this video featuring P Rangers $ Jerk. PIIQ seamlessly moves with thier moves as they bust out some tricks I couldn’t do on my best day. Don’t know about you but I think they could out dance SYTYCD contestants.

And there’s also some events where you can spot PIIQ headphones. Upcoming destinations include Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

If you feel like you’ve missed the boat on this one, not to worry. There’s always updates so be sure to fan thier new Facebook page. In fact, the first two people to check out PIIQ’s facebook page and come back here posting a comment below with your favorite PIIQ Facebook page wall post gets a new pair of PIIQ headphones as your entry into PIIQ fandom. It’s the Qlasp model which by the way have a unique design that clips onto your ear in a whole new and ultra comfortable way.

Remember commenters – be sure to be specific (or it doesn’t count) and if you’re entering a guest post don’t forget a valid email address or I can’t get a hold of you (not in the post itself please). Good Luck!

My Sony Reader Pocket Edition

One day left to take the two chapter challenge

By: | Posted: 8/17/2010

How long does it take you to get into a book? If I can get past the first chapter or two, I’m usually in for the long haul. Now, for those of you who made the switch from paper to ebook, how long did it take you to get used to the new format? I received my first Sony Reader a month ago, a pink Pocket Edition which goes just about everywhere I go. The transition time from paper to eInk was zero for me. It’s been a pleasure.

The Sony Reader team also subscribes to the philosophy that a couple of chapters with a Sony Reader will have you hooked. They began the Two Chapter Challenge which means if you buy a Sony Reader from Sony Style, try it for two chapters, if you don’t love it you can return it within 30 days of your purchase. The challenge ends tomorrow, so if you’ve been teetering on the ebook or not fence, it’s time to try!

Find out how you can take advantage of the Two Chapter Challenge from the new Sony Reader Store page on Facebook. If you’re a Sony Reader fan, or just a fan of reading, make sure to hit the like button. There are some great conversations about reading and books there and if you have a story to share about your transition from paper to ebook we’d love to hear your experience.

Believe Billboard

Make a Statement in Times Square Contest

By: | Posted: 8/16/2010

What dream would you like to turn into reality?

“I will perform an original song I composed to the world.”
“I will become a professional gamer.”
“I will get my dream job video blogging about technology.”
“I will turn my screenplay into a film.”
“Millions of people will see my name in lights!”

What do these quotes have in common? Yes they are all under 140 characters, but they also have another common thread: Make.Believe.

From time to time you’ve heard us here at Sony use this phrase (it’s pronounced – make dot believe), which is a simple message based on the belief that dreams can be made into reality. As the manufacturer of the technology and tools that can make many of these dreams real, we’re proud to introduce Sony’s “Make A Statement in Times Square contest.” It’s your chance to share your personal dreams with us and with millions of people via the Times Square Billboard in New York City.

So, what would you like to see become a reality? Follow and tweet your answers to @Sony starting with the hashtag #sonyibelieve and your dream could be featured on the billboard to the world. Winners will also get a Sony bloggie camera, which for a video blogger like me is the kind of tool that has made many dreams come true.

Here’s how it works:
1. Using your Twitter account, follow @Sony.

2. Send @Sony your statement and include #sonyibelieve.

3. You can submit unlimited entries now through Aug. 20, 2010 at 11:59 a.m. EST.

4. Five winners will receive Bloggie HD cameras and have their #sonyibelieve tweets put on the Times Square Billboard in NYC.

5. For more info, visit http://www.sony.com/ibelieve/

Here’s some footage taken of the billboard where the Make.Believe messages will be featured. So, take a minute and let yourself dream of things that might seem impossible, but are actually just a tweet away from becoming a reality.

If you still need some inspiration, check out some true Make.Believe stories here.

Sony 3D glasses

It’s Easy to See: 3D Glasses Critical at Retail

By: | Posted: 8/13/2010

With apologies to that clever beer commercial that’s stuck in my head…I don’t always watch 3D TV, but when I do, I prefer to watch it with active-shutter glasses.

In order to enjoy the joyous, immersive power of 3D, one must wear glasses. It’s either as simple or complex as that, depending on your point of view. But 3D TV without glasses? That’s just a poor proposition.

But according to several friends, that’s exactly what’s going on at some of the big-box retailers. There are myriad 3D TVs on display, but finding a working pair of glasses can be an adventure. Some glasses are on display, but from what’ve been told, they either don’t work or are damaged beyond recognition.

Some retailers have chosen to keep their supply of 3D in a back room and provide them only when they are requested. I went into a retailer the other day to test this out and walked around for 10-15 minutes trying to find someone who could help me. Even when I did track someone down, he told me he’d have to meet me by the TVs as he was closing a digital camera sale.

Sounded reasonable enough.

I waited for an additional 10 minutes, staring at 3D TVs that simply didn’t do the technology, the manufacturers, or the retailer, justice.

I then departed.

So what I suggest is this: When you go into a big-box retailer, track down a sales person immediately and ask for a pair of 3D glasses (preferably Sony’s active-shutter model) if there aren’t working models on display. Chances are they’ll have some stashed in a back room, just waiting to provide them to you.

It sounds like a cliché, but it’s not: Seeing is believing when it comes to 3D. But you need 3D glasses before you can believe.

In fact, 74 percent of consumers experiencing our 3D demo at Sony Style stores reported the 3D demo was better than their expectations; 42 percent said it was much better.

Here’s hoping our partners at retail exceed consumers’ expectations when it comes to the 3D experience.

We’d love to hear about your experiences about 3D TV at retail. Please let us know when you get a chance.
