New 3D Video by Sony

By: | Posted: 6/24/2010

From makers of professional equipment to creators of 3D films and games, Sony is involved in every stage of the 3D experience. We’ve talked a lot about the TVs but  let’s talk content. Well, how about I present a documentary instead.

We’ve recently finished developing an engaging short feature titled “3D World Created by Sony”. Here true experts in their field talk about the movement to 3D across their industries from general 3D technology to 3D gaming and 3D movies.

You’ll hear from Buzz Hayes, Executive Stereoscopic 3D Producer for Sony Pictures Entertainment. I had a unique opportunity to meet Buzz as he’s also the head of the Sony 3D Technology Center in Culver City. Buzz helps filmmakers create films thinking about 3D in order to create the most comfortable and enjoyable experience. From the way you direct to how you edit, more and more movies are getting made for 3D and Sony (and Buzz) is at the front of it all. Paul Anderson, Director of “Resident Evil Afterlife” talks about the art of 3D direction in film. I was inspired to learn that simply by allowing 3D cinema to take place, a whole new storytelling opportunity is there.Mick Hocking & Simon Benson, key 3D players at Sony Computer Entertainment gives us a sneak peak at the experiences we can expect in 3D gaming and talk a little bit about why Sony 3D gaming has been able to advance so quickly.

But enough about the short film, take a look and let me know what you think about it.

Summer VAIO Signature Collection Debuted

By: | Posted: 6/23/2010

The new Summer 2010 VAIO® Signature Collection made its debut this morning.

Ten models complete this season’s line and like the previous Spring Collection, it includes both laptops and a desktop.

New to the Signature family is the EA Signature models impressively out the gate with a unique Arabesque design. Starting at $919.00, its raised fanciful patterns feel similar to the touch as a luxurious wall mosaic. My favorite is the black Arabesque design as it is a clever way to combine an antique-like pattern with a contemporary glossy black.

VAIO

A pink and gold Arabesque model is also offered. The Signature VAIO EA laptops are all customized models (and all come with the ATI graphics card option).

The Signature VAIO F laptop definitely lives up to the superior computing performance known to Signature Collection models and is a nice computer for photo enthusiast. This is the only VAIO F that includes the new VAIO TransferJet™ technology and also comes with premium specs such as a Full HD display, 1GB gfx, BDRW, 640GB, 8GB, and Windows 7 Ultimate.

The VAIO Z laptop makes two appearances in the collection this season and talk about gadget envy. The Carbon Fiber VAIO Z computer comes with an Intel ®Core™ I7-620M (2.66Hz) processor, Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate 64-bit, a 13.1” Full HD LED backlit display, a hybrid graphics card (1 GB VRAM), 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, a Blu-ray Disc™ player/burner, and Verizon Wireless with the new Share my Connection ™ technology that turns your PC into its own mobile hotspot for up to 5 PCs or other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Following the spring season’s “Metal Mosaic” look, the new Metal Shield VAIO Z model takes it up a level. Its design features a hexagonal object with a triangular object inside, giving an illusion of a spinning motion. Inside, the model is loaded with some pretty high tech features which make this VAIO a great one for travelers. Integrated active noise cancelling technology and supplied headphones provide crystal-clear audio in noisy mobile scenarios without an adapter (yep, this comes with noise canceling headphones).A built-in biometric fingerprint scanner makes authentication and secure access quick, and this VAIO also comes with the option for the new Share my Connection ™ technology.

The X135 also makes an appearance on the Summer Signature Collection page. Offered in Glossy Premium Carbon Fiber ($1599.99) and Black ($1499.99), the VAIO X weighs 1.6 lbs (with standard battery) and also comes with an extended battery in the box to allow the owner up to 12 hours of battery life. Exclusive to this model, it also comes with a 128 GB solid state drive. Other specs include an Intel® Atom™ Processor Z550 (2.0 GHz), Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 11.1” LED backlit display and 2 GB RAM.

In Signature tradition, a new P series is introduced and is the highest configuration of the VAIO P series to date and weighs 1.3 lbs (with standard battery).  The P118 specs include an Intel® Processor (2.00GHz), Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 8″ LCD, 2GB RAM, 256GB solid state drive, Verizon Mobile Broadband Built-in, GPS, Bluetooth® technology and a webcam.

And to round out the season, a new VAIO J all-in-one touchscreen PC is offered. The J118 is $1549.99 and comes in a contemporary white color.

What you think the general design aesthetic of this line is? I take away a dashing, urban feel. Maybe I got that impression from the witty subtle background in the Signature showcase. Do you see it?

….More photos for everyone :-) A shout out to our 6/24 Guest commenter for asking!

Sony shows off 3D at the CEA Line Show with Live World Cup Matches

By: | Posted: 6/22/2010

This week is the Consumer Electronics Association Line Show in New York City and as we’ve seen since CES at the beginning of this year, 3D home entertainment is at the top of mind of presenters and attendees. Sony has a huge presence as we showcase many of the 3D home entertainment products that just became available for sale this month.

We’re making the most of the World Cup timing by broadcasting FIFA Matches live in 3D at the show. Yes, it’s fun to get wrapped up in World Cup excitement, but you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen World Cup in 3D! It is the first time the World Cup has been broadcast in 3D on the newly launched ESPN 3D channel. They are also a good reminder of Sony’s involvement in all aspects of the 3D ecosystem from the home products to the Sony professional equipment being used to broadcast the games in South Africa.

For those of us who didn’t make it to the line show, here are some tweets from people that stopped by the Sony booth to experience the live broadcast of Nigeria vs. South Korea in 3D.
If you are at the Line Show today, make sure to stop by Sony booth for some more Live 3D World Cup action as the Ghana vs Germany match which will be broadcast at 2PM EDT. While you’re there ask about the active shutter glasses, motion flow technology the strong infrared transmitter and backlight – all aspects of Sony 3D technology that ensure the best quality 3D experience. If you’re nowhere near the Line Show and New York, you can still experience FIFA in 3D. Find out where and when here.

Updated VAIO Z, L, F and Y Computers

By: | Posted: 6/22/2010

Its summer time and we’ve got warmer weather, ice cream, picnics and now new VAIO® computer models on Sony Style. Here’s the DL on what’s new:

We’ve got a refresh on the VAIO Z Series notebook. I saw many a request on our blog post, “Interviews with the Sony VAIO Z Notebook Designers”, asking for Full HD screen specs beyond the Signature Collection model. I’ve got great news to share because it’s in.  A Full HD LED backlit display is available as a customized option. And to thank the many who lobbied for it, Sony Style is offering a free upgrade to a Full HD display right now with purchase of a customized VAIO Z 1290X (ends 7/3/10) . See here for details.  Starting at $1919.99, it sports optional features like a Intel® Core™ i7-620M processor, up to a 512GB hard drive, up to 8GB memory, available Blu-ray Disc player/burner and comes with Dynamic Hybrid Graphics. Still super light at about 3.07 lbs (with standard battery), the new VAIO Z Series notebook also comes with a backlit keyboard. That can be a lifesaver when you’re trying to type on a plane and feel bad turning on that awful overhead light with the person sleeping in the seat next to you.

Next up is the VAIO F Series notebook “refresh”. Popular among gamers and movie buffs, this model starts at $999.99. Available with a Full HD screen option as well (they are in stock yeah!), specs include up to an available Intel® Core™ i7-840QM processor, available 256 GB solid state drive, up to 8GB memory, available Blu-ray Disc player/burner and NVIDIA graphics card (up to 1GB VRAM). The F series also has a backlit keyboard available. And there’s a free upgrade to a Full HD display  with purchase of a customized F129oX too right now (ends 7/3/10) so for details go here.

The L Series is also out with some new specs. In addition to a Bordeaux Red offering, other updates include available Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q8400S processor, available 1TB (7200rpm) hard drive, up to 8GB memory, NVIDIA® graphics (up to 1GB VRAM), and Blu-ray Disc player/burner. The L also comes with an HDMI in and a TV tuner is available.

VAIO Y

Lastly but certainly not least is the new Y Series notebook offerings. It’s highly mobile and now available to customize in six new colors. My favorite color is the purple which was a popular request. Starting at about $769.99, the Y Series notebook has an available Intel® Core™ i5-430UM processor, up to 256 GB solid state drive, up to 8 GB memory and available ATI Mobility Radeon™ (512MB VRAM) graphics card.

If you get a chance to take a look on Sony Style, I’d love to hear what you think. If you like this, more to come soon.

What is Google TV? Answered in Under 3 Min

By: | Posted: 6/16/2010

Since  Sony Internet TV with Google TV was announced last month at the Google Developers conference in San Francisco, there’s been plenty of “buzz” and curiosity on how the experience works.  If there is any confusion as to how a television with the power of the Internet functions, this latest video from Google will  certainly clear things up.  Posted yesterday with a run time of under 3 minutes, the video provides a quick look into just some of the experiences owners of a Sony Internet TV could have. When the video says “some new TVs will come with it preinstalled”, we’d love for you to immediately think of Sony. The Sony Internet TV lineup, which will be available first in the US later this Fall, will feature a standalone TV and a set-top box Blu-ray player that would add the features to an existing TV.
We’re proud to say that we’ll be the first TV manufacturer to hit the market with Google TV on board. You can visit our Sony Internet TV page for more info.
