Alpha NEX Videos Show Off Camera’s Features In Chile

By: | Posted: 6/30/2010

For those that think successful, accomplished professional photographers really do have one of the best gigs around, I personally think you’re right. While I love to blog stories like this, living them certainly seems great.

Professional photographer, David McLain recently took the Alpha NEX-5 for a test drive in locations across South America. In addition being away on assignments worldwide for National Geographic, Smithsonian and Traveler,  David is also a Sony Artisan of Imagery, a group of photographers across specialties who share their expertise with Sony customers through photography discussions and events.

The idea behind the shoot was simple.  Give a seasoned pro the NEX-5, a plane ticket to Chile, and total creative freedom.  The result is a series of videos that demonstrate some of the amazing new features found on Alpha NEX cameras.  With a Sony NEX-5 in toe, he was off to Chile taking shots ranging from sand dunes to chapels to wineries.

The outcome? A series of videos focusing on the key features of the Alpha NEX camera line.   Not only did I learn more about how these features can be used  but I can see the end result. In this case some amazing footage I can’t wait to show you.

We were able to get some great behind the scenes shots of David in action. While the NEX-5 is one heck of a camera, seeing these behind the scenes photos really reminded me that by really moving around, you can better explore the sense of space around you for a fantastic perspective on an object. After seeing these behind the scenes photos, I take more photos sitting on fences, from the ground, etc.

All this fun and just in time for the recently released firmware update to the NEX line enabling 3D Sweep Panorama. You can learn more about that here: NEX-3/NEX-5.

I’d love to know what you thought about these videos and as always if there is anything else you’d like to learn about the Alpha NEX camera line,  let me know.

Backstage Quick Tip #23: Minimizing Eye Strain While at the Computer

By: | Posted: 6/30/2010

Editors Note: Backstage Technicians are here to help and in this ongoing series, they’ll offer me their favorite tips and provide answers to some of the most common service related questions they hear at both the call center and in Sony Style Stores.

When sitting at the computer, it’s important to optimize our comfort level since we’re often in the same position for hours on end.  Things to consider include how our chairs are adjusted, the position of our hands, head and legs.  The comfort of our eyes though is just as important and often overlooked.  In fact, a few minor adjustments to the brightness of your screen can help reduce eye strain and enhance your overall viewing experience.

Keep in mind not every situation calls for your screen to be at its maximum brightness.  For example, if you’re watching a movie – by all means max your display brightness out and enjoy.  On the other hand, if the light around you is dim a bright screen could be hard on your eyes, whether you realize it at first or not.

Your display also consumes a lot of battery power – the brighter the display setting, the more power it draws.  So if you’re watching that same movie on a long flight, you may want to consider dimming your screen to ensure you get to finish it with plenty of time to spare for other things.

That said, adjusting the brightness of your screen is simple.  In just a few quick steps, you can easily adjust the brightness of your display, improving both the quality of your viewing experience and the life of your battery.

You may already know how to adjust the brightness of your display through Windows, by selecting Control Panel => System and Security => Power Options, then adjusting the slider from left to right.

But did you know your VAIO PC makes this process even easier?  Your VAIO is designed to give you quick access to some of the most common function shortcuts.  You can find these shortcuts on the Function keys along the top row of your keyboard.  Simply select and hold the Function key (“Fn”) and F6 to make the screen brighter or F5 to dim the screen.  You can make changes to your screen’s brightness on-the-fly as you watch a video, browse the web, read a document or look at pictures, without disrupting your onscreen experience or PC’s performance.

You can also create brightness and power presets for the various situations you might find yourself in.  Let’s go back to the in-flight movie example.  Instead of manually making adjustments to your VAIO each time your on a flight and wanting to watch a movie, you can tweak a pre-existing power preset.  That way, when your VAIO determines you’re running on batteries but watching a movie it will automatically make all the necessary adjustments for you.  Here’s how:

1. Select Control Control Panel => System and Security => Power Options

2. Select the present you want to tweak.

  • 1. For the in-flight movie example, select Interevideo WinDVD (this preset correlates with the use of the WinDVD application)
  • 2. Select Change plan settings

2. Tweak the power and brightness settings as you see fit under the On battery column.

Even better, select VAIO PCs include an ambient light sensor, which detects the ambient light around your computer and adjust the screen’s brightness accordingly – taking the guess work out of setting the optimal screen brightness for your situation.

Dash

Attention Dash Fans Around The World

By: | Posted: 6/29/2010

A few months back, I posted the article “Dash Personal Internet Viewer:Your Questions Answered”. There, I received a ton of feedback looking for the Dash to work outside the US. I also saw comments on Facebook and Sony Style’s product reviews.

Overall, you’ve been asking to access Dash in countries around the globe and the Dash team heard folks loud and clear. I have great news to share as the restrictions that prevented Dash from initializing and working outside of the USA has been removed. W00T!

Just a quick note however that Dash is still primarily intended for use in the United States (only sold in the states) and the availability of apps and services will vary by region. For instance many providers automatically geo-filter their content so your experience with your Dash may vary depending on your location. I’m super excited to share this news! Thanks to the many folks who posted their thoughts on the blog and on Facebook. It’s appreciated.

Announcing the Walkman Runners at the Rock n Roll Marathon Seattle

By: | Posted: 6/26/2010

First of all, hats off to all the runners in the San Diego race held in early June. It was a huge success with some 30,000 runners making their way through San Diego streets to the finish line at Sea World. The picture above is of the winner of the women’s race and Sony’s Mike Kahn and Brian Pancarik who were holding the ribbon at the finish line.

Now, onto this weekend – Seattle is the next stop of the Rock n Roll Marathon and Sony Walkman will be there again in full force, with some exciting new developments.

If you’re at the race, stop by the Sony Walkman van. It’s a great way to get hands on time with the Wearable Walkman and to test it out to see if it’s the perfect fitness partner for you. Make sure to ask the crew to show you the jump rope test (they love doing that).

Also, we’re proud to announce that Meb Keflezighi, US Olympian and winner of a 2004 Silver Medal, the 2008 NYC Marathon and holder of numerous US running records, will be on site appearing on Sony’s behalf. Meb will be doing signings at Sony’s booth and the Seattle Health + Fitness Expo and the finish line village on race day. Stay tuned for a blog post from Meb himself in the coming weeks. We’d also like to officially announce our new Walkman Runners blogger team, which is a group of bloggers entrenched in both the running community and online world. They’ll be running several of the R+R events sporting our new Walkman W, and documenting some of their experiences using the Sony bloggie. Our first two team members are Andrew Cawood and Stephanie Arango, who are both active online talking about all things running.

Andrew has been running since he was 7 and has been racking up the miles, he’s run 150 races in his lifetime and is just shy of hitting 34,000 miles. He ran the San Diego Rock’N’Roll half-marathon in a personal record 1:14, thanks in part to the tunes he was rockin from his W series. See his blog post about the race and the W Series.

Stephanie has been distance running since the 3rd grade. In 2009 she ran 18 Marathons in 18 states. Rock N Roll Seattle will be her 13th marathon this year. Keep an eye out for her during the race!
Stay tuned to the blog throughout the year for more exciting content from the Sony Walkman team!

Video Recap – Design For Humanity Event

By: | Posted: 6/25/2010

Two weeks ago, the VAIO team headed to L.A. to support Design For Humanity – Billabong’s annual charity event.  If you’ve seen the new boardshort-inspired W Series, you know we’ve partnered with Billabong to create the design.  We also featured the colorful new VAIO at the charity event.

Find out more about the event, the charity and what inspired the design of the Imperial Lime W Series in this behind-the-scenes look at the Design For Humanity charity event by our very own Sony Electronics video blogger, Sukhjit.

Also, be sure to check out all the photos from the event here, on our flickr page.
