Part 2: Think Pink

by Gina 10/01/2009, in Contact the Blog

In October of 1983, 800 people in Dallas, Texas woke up that morning and together took a stand to fight breast cancer by running in the very first Race for the Cure. Two years later in 1985, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded and ghosts and goblins generously shared their October with this special cause. In 1991, pink ribbons were handed out to breast cancer survivors in New York running for the cause & 2 years later The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was developed using the pink ribbon as its symbol. Since then, millions of people have stood up, hundreds of companies have pitched in and numerous countries have gotten involved. The question now remains.

What will you do?

You might have read in my bio that I love anything pink. Well now you know why. My grandmother is a survivor and for me, October is a time to not only be reminded of routine screenings but to also honor my grandmother’s strength. I show her my support by purchasing pink products (I even send in those yogurt lids) and by participating in at least one event a year. This year, Jen (who you might know on the Sony Electronics Blog) and I are running a 5K as her mother-in-law is also a survivor.

What will you do?

Volunteer: Get involved with an organization, or even drop off a dinner for someone fighting the disease.

Show Your Support: Sign up for a walk or race. Attend a benefit concert. Donate.

Wear It Loud, Wear It Proud: Pink is the symbolic color for the cause. Dozens of companies get behind this. You can too.

I am genuinely appreciative to see that Sony participates in Breast Cancer Awareness Month in so many ways. Our Sony Style retail store team will be proudly wearing pink ribbons all month.  Sony Electronics will be donating $110,000 in conjunction with sales made in October from the Reader Pocket Edition in Rose, and VAIO W Series Mini Notebook bundle VPCW111XX/PC to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

So if you’re in the market for electronics & you like pink, selecting a pink product is an easy way to show your support. If you’re in the market for electronics and pink isn’t your color then you can also participate in our “Shop for the Cause” event on October 20th from 6pm-8pm in all retail Sony Style retail stores*.

We’re honoring our first 25 guests that spend $150 or more that night by giving them a free “I Shop for a Cause” stylish tote. Plus that evening we will donate a maximum of $15,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

If you’ve done something in the past, have an idea to share, know a survivor or have plans to support the cause, this month, I invite you to share your thoughts here. If everyone does their part, imagine the impact we can all make.

You can read about what the VAIO team is doing in Michael’s post,  “Part 2: Think Pink, VAIO Style” and more on the rose colored Reader Pocket Edition in Part 1: Think Pink.

*See stores for details. Event will not occur at Sony Style COMCAST center in Philadelphia, PA.
